I have just bought a P38 and I love it, its all the car anyone could ever want!

Its a 1998 2.5 DSE Auto, its all running fine, but as seams to be common, I have a few faults!

I have done much searching and found some answers to some problems but thought I would start a thread to see if anyone can confirm / offer good advice.

1. ABS light stays on for first 100 yards - normal? In a morning its the ABS and handbrake light, thereafter just ABS light. Once out ABS works fine.

2. Injector / engine light comes on when lifting off after a run on a dual carriage way etc and I loose power for 2 seconds - after which its fine. The car has been stood for a while so hopefully could be just clogged up injectors?

3. When coming to a stop the idle speed is not reached and the engine judders - it settles down after a couple of seconds.

4. Engine temp not constant - runs cool on a commute and gets a bit hotter around town (not over half way though) I am replacing the thermostat this week to see if its that.

5. I have the Harman Kardon Stereo, new CD head unit but no sound. I have checked everything and believe its the main amp??? - yet to check this.

6. No heated seats - I have seen a repair i need to do.

7. When hot it has a starting problem, takes a couple of seconds of cranking before firing. I have seen the different glow plug trick fixes, but how do you fix it properly???

.........at least the air suspension works, for now!

I will be watching closely, i have your abs and handbrake light issue, all works fine but stays on for a while. hope everything is ok.

Good luck

my abs light stays on for a few yards 1st thing in the morning,2nd the no.4 injector has an electrical sensor(needel lift) and are prone to playing up,3rd could be related to the injector,4 th might not have a stat in, 5&6 cant help, 7 the proper way is to have a new fuel pump(engine end not the tank expensive ) or you can buy a hot start kit that lets the glow plugs come when hot and makes starting alot easier get a timed one so it reverts back to normal after 30 seconds

:welcome2: to the assylum!

ABS light stays on until you move at about 6mph, basically a system check. So long as extinguishing on moving....forget it!

Thanks, I thought it might be as it does on BMW bikes (something i know a bit more about)

Thanks

3. If the idle is lumpy it may be the DMF... not sure how this manifests itself to start with..etc Might be worth a search and hour of research to count out. It could also be connected to the injectors.

4. That temp sound same as mine. The slight rise in traffic sounds right (basic if engine needs to work hard or not get airflow).

If the temp stays cold though - the fan viscous may be stuck or a slow closing thermostat.

You can check the viscous by how hard it is to turn (engine off).
You can check the stat by placing in boiling water and check it opens fine... then hook the bugger out and check that it closes again (shouldn't take too long). I don't know how long it should take... sorry but some of the other might. (depends on how hot water is and air temp I suppose).

ABS is normal. It is busy priming something underthebulkhead, ifI recall.

Re, running cool but over heating in traffic. This will be something very simple. They should run with the needle just on the cool side of half way.

If it's getting warm in traffic then I would hazard that it is air flow over the rad, or more specifically either a rad full of dead bugs or with parts of it blocked up.

I'd flush the system and run a hose from the back over the filaments to push back out any much.

Re problem starting when hot, if it feels like the battery is low when it isn't then it could be an earthing issue.

I fixed the stereo this evening - turns out the aftermarket head unit does not power the amps - simple fix with an ignition live to the amp power lead.

The next thing is the stat, didnt get chance to take it out today but will do later in the week. How easy is is to get out? I will flush the rad at the same time.

Thanks for the advice guys.
