So after years of deliberation my classic mini is up for sale and a replacement British classic is waiting in the wings.
This time something a little more practical for the family life I now live but also a fun project to build and enjoy.
I have brought an 87 reg 90 van for £900 which has had a professionally fitted 200tdi lump from a disco. Comes with the old gearbox plus the disco gearbox, new bulk head to be fitted when needed and also a few tools jack ect. All in all I think I have a bargain due to my pal who's selling it moving to OZ.

Ironically although my first car was a classic mini, I actually learnt to drive in disco when I was a lad away in snowdonia on a scout camp.

My new project needs a gearbox and also a few other odd and sods but my first issue is transporting the bugger from Godalming back to Orpington Kent. Was hoping to use a car trailer but the weight of the landy far exceeds what my daily driver legacy estate can tow, now just hoping Shiply comes through with a solution.
Once I get my toy tonka truck home I will need to fit rear windows for it to conform to LEZ and get V5 changed to estate and not van, it already has rear seat and seatbelt a fitted.

Gearbox wise I am thinking of an lt77 but with the disco transfer box, I would love to run an Ashcroft R380 box but funds won't allow so plan is to keep it simple get it on the road and upgrade in the future.

I will no doubt be asking lots of silly Qs along the way as I get the little tonka truck back on the road and will post piccys of my progress as I go.

As the little truck is now:

Welcome, looks pretty good.

And yeah you're right. Stick with defender lt77 gearbox. Otherwise there cutting and chopping to do and always best to keep things easy for parts. I too would love a short block r380 Ashcroft special but that's hooooge money!

Looks like a great project and has some nice mods too.

Just sold my 1380 Mini to fund my Defender project, it's my first Defender but had 3 Discovery's so far. The discovery 3 was way above budget so got an L200 pickup and a Defender for the weekend.

Good luck with the project, hope you get it home soon. Mine is too wide for my car trailer with the wheel spacers so a mate had to tow it with his ambulance!

Good looking Land Rover there mate. Don't want to **** on your parade but I think you need more than side windows to make it LEZ compliant.

Was looking into this before I purchased the landy, hoping that this is my loop hole taken from the landrover section if Tfl LEZ site:
A small number of Defenders, 90s and 110s may be a 'station wagon', but may not be classified as such by the DVLA. If your vehicle has side windows and fixed seats in the back of the vehicle, and up to 9 seats including the drivers seat, it will not be subject to the LEZ. In these circumstances you need to:

For models registered from 1998 - correct the body type description, vehicle model details and/or number of seats with the DVLA
For models registered before 1998 - register your vehicle with TfL with suitable photographic proofs if you intend to use the vehicle in the LEZ.
If you have a Land Rover which is not listed above, please contact us to find out if your vehicle is subject to LEZ.

I'm pretty sure that would only apply if it was originally built as a CSW (county station wagon) but were not classified as such. Either way hope it works out for you. you have got a serious bargain that you won't lose money on!

It doesn't state factory only estates, working on the same principle of changing a transit van into a camper.
Once re registered on V5 and if need be VOSA checks ect I would assume it will be LEZ compliant. Fingers crossed.

That does look very good value for money, I hope the chassis is good too. You will enjoy working on it and driving it,nice simple vehicle without too much gubbins but a few useful xtras.
I have friends in London and sometimes used to take my hardtop ther pre the LEZ bollix came in. I looked at what I would need to do but thort it was too much hassle and thought I could hire a van if needed!

I hope your LEZ plan works. mine certainly didnt!

what mini are you selling? pictures? im always looking for another one :D

I have been quoted £154 quid all in for transportation, anyone know if this I a fair price?
Distance is 49 miles that the 90 needs to be transported.

Regards LEZ. You should be able to get it compliant without any issue, but you don't have to dick about with the DVLA. The DVLA are not changing any V5s for vehicles built before 1998 anyway, so they won't help you.

However all you need to do is send TfL some photos of yours with windows/seats in the back and they will update their records.

So I now have the little landy home and although it needs a little work I think it's pretty straight for the age.
I have a good bulk head to fit and also and new seat box area to fit as well, curent ones are not to bad but if the gear box is out already I may as well future proof it now rather than getting it on the road then needing to take it off again to fit new panels.

On the windows front I am thinking of fitting the masai sliding window kit which is very similar to standard landy items, if I find a complete CSW roof and sides I may well just swap the whole lot.

Gearbox wise I will stick with LT177 but fit a disco transfer box.
Hoping to sell off the the old disco gearbox to help found new gearbox.

Also need to get new tyres and fit a new filler pipe for tank.

All in all for £900 of the queens finest notes I'm a happy camper, merry Xmas to me and to everyone.
All the best for 2013 let the fun begin!
