A couple of weeks ago I bought a '97 300tdi. It's basically standard except for a second battery in the boot which I assume is because it started life as an airfield vehicle and this was to power the radio's, lights etc. It also has a Kenlowe fan.

First job was to change all the oils and get the difflock working. Someone had had a go at the difflock, whacking the shaft and mushrooming the end so it wouldn't move. After getting it apart a bit of persuasion with a grinding wheel sorted that and it now has a working difflock. I also got rid of the front valance because it looked like it wouldn't survive long offroad.

My mate in the unit next door preps vans for sale and he was quiet so he gave it a mop and polish.

Now I was determined not to go mad buying stuff for it until I could work out where I wanted to be but two of the tyres were a bit knackered soooo

Then I was looking around the bay of fleas while under the influence of Crabbies and bought a bloody snorkel which is being delivered today doh!

(my justification for this is that I want to move the second battery up front just in case I want to fit a winch at a later date, that's my story and I'm sticking to it :))

Thanks guys. I reckon it will need some welding before the next MOT but knowing I was getting a Disco I bought a welder which I'm practicing with as and when I can. I've got some scrap car body panels to practice on and I have blown the odd hole. Still, I have some time to learn.

I did put in another thread that I wasn't going to go mad with mods until I really knew what I needed but that isn't going quite to plan. A snorkel was delivered yesterday and steering and diff guards are on their way.

I justified the snorkel to my self on the grounds that I want to move the second battery from the boot to the engine bay so if (if? yeah right) I want to fit a winch it will be easier to wire up and I need the space in front of the air filter :)

I blame alcohol for the steering and diff guards :beer2:

can you shove some pics up of battery location in boot, is it wired to alternagtor or split charge?

im having my 2nd ion the boot for rear winch so may be interested in cabling if ur getting rid lol

Here's what I got done today

The battery case in the back:

And I presume this is the split charge gubbins:

I'll basically just be moving it to the front so just really shortening the live.

chers for that,

if youv got snorkle dont worget your other wading items, brethers on axles, gera box tranny box and fuel tank (possible cam cover too), and 2 bolts one for gear box and one for the cam cover

OOps,

Had a lot of weight in the back yesterday and found the new tyres rub so I've ordered some Flatdog arches and it looks like I will have to get busy with cutting. It's a bit of a bummer because I could have got bigger tyres but oh well, have to wait until these wear out :)

Todays effort, the first rear took about an hour because I was frightened of cutting too much off and ended up having to cut three times. Second rear took about 20 mins :)
