Hi been reading through the forum and got to November and not yet found my problem so any help would be great thanks

Problem

Got an 89 landrover 2500 td. Done loads of work on it. Had a problem two or three times where the engine would rev right out not long after start up followed by lots of white smoke so changed the turbo a few months ago as was pretty smokey in the cab plus getting quite a bit of white smoke when driving. New turbo has been fine for a few months with much less/no white smoke. Started it up tonight and same thing happened...reved right out lots of knocking...cut the engine...restarted and **** loads of white smoke and after 15 mins of white now bloody blue smoke! Any ideas why the engine is intermitently trying to destroy itself?

it's burning its own oil and will get to the stage when the only way it stops is by blowing itself up. You need to sort it, best way to do this is by putting a TDi from a disco in! The turdo (yes, turdo) sucks oil from the engine in which atomises and is burnt with the fuel in the air.

Thanks for that
Put a kandn air filter in a few months ago...should be ok..will check it..if i pull the dip stick and see what comes out will that tell me if the rings are fooked?

no. to see if the rings are fooked you gotta take off the oil filler cap and cover it with your hand (to block off the breather) (With the engine running) and see if the pressure builds up. You can expect some, but its usually fairly obvious what is some or what is lots.

ok thanks for that...will do air filter and check tommorow on the oil filler cap pressue. I guess the age old question is coming...do i change the engine or opt for a rebuild in situ? is that possible and feasible? Can do alot of stuff but not sure am up for changing a bloody engine...the thought of a slow strip and rebuild seems much more appealing on my skill level and my pocket!

also check the dip stick is the right one ! i had a ford cargo and when i first got it i filled the engine with oil untill it was at the correct level on the dip stick started the engine and let it run a while.
all of a sudden it went on full throttle and was hammering white smoke out, nothing i did would shut the engine down and in a blind panick i ripped the air intake pipe off and put my hand over the intake manifold. BIG MISTAKE ! it nearly took my hand in due to the volume of air going into the 6 cylinder engine but it did kill the engine before it exploded.
i later found out it was running off the engine oil being forced into the cylinders which was why i couldnt stop the engine. it turns out the dip stick was not the right one and was to short which is why the engine was over filled with oil.
check this isnt the case with yours ?

might not be the old gits fault ? if the dip stick is to short then there will be more oil in the engine than there should be and the dip stick will show its at just the right level. this was the problem with my cargo engine.

I HAD ESACTLY THAT.

I spent silly money re-conditioning a turbo and it wasnt the problem, it was the injector pump.

TRY THIS;

Disconect the pipe that goes from the turbo to the injector pump and plug it at both ends, give it a try. Youll have a little less power but it should run fine.

Oh right....the bule smoke. If that doesent work, **** it. Get another engine, eather a 200 out a disco, or offer "DiscoJamez" £100 for his old 12J unit hes getting rid of (if your local). He might even fit it for you if you make him a fair enough offer.

Ok so checked the filler and its blowing white smoke out the hole..like a bloody stream engine...more than there should be am sure. Also blowing white smoke out the dip stick. The thing is running ok...got 70mph out of it today no probs. Blue smoke still coming out...mainly on start up. Gets better when warmed up.

Think the engine is shagged?

So i go for a 200 tdi engine? Where is the best place to get a pukka recon engine fitted by someone who knows what there doing? want 10 years out of this thing and if it means its gonna pull the caravn with my lass and the four kids then fook it...may as well bite the bullet.

Can i save my stainless exhaust i just fitted?(yes i know what a divi)

Also i assume i can prolong the engine life by cleaning all the pipes up and the air filter regular?

Thanks alot

it'll probably keep running for a good few more miles yet - keeping everything oil free will be an impossible task - it does sound like it's on it's last legs - how many miles has it done ? 130K ish ? - you'l also find that it'l eventually start using almost as much oil as it does fuel, blowing the oil filler cap off at anything over 40MPH is quite common

time to start saving for a 200

Your exhaust may need cutting a bit but it should stay OK.

You will get 10 years outta a good TDi without needing a recon one.Unless it gets abused.

You could help this one along abit by regular filter and oil changes, and if you feel up to it then new rings may help. You can do a good tdi conversion yourself if you try, for minimal costs. I think mine cost me around £300 tops, i bought the entire disco see.

Or else expect to pay around £1000 from what i have heard for a good conversion, but even then they will only do for you what you could do yourself, making up pipes, welding a mount or two.

Personally i enjoyed doing my own conversion, not least cos you then know exactly what state everything is in - read wiltshire landymans thread titles something like 'thieving robbing scumbag arseholes' for a brief lowdown on the work a lot of 'recommended' garages do.

its done 140k....how much you rekon i need for a proper good engine fitted?

i'd say about 300 for a disco engine plus another 250 for associated parts - plus a few quid more for items you should change when do the swop such as clutch/release bearing/oils etc

this is assuming you have the space, time, tools and a engine hoist or safe means of lifting the engine in/out

at this point i'd like to say "do a fecking search" cos this has been covered in great depth on here and many others forums - many of which have detailed pictures as well
