Hi,
I recently bought a 1985 2.5 diesel N/A, and was over the moon with it.
It had been subject to a full body off restoration, and looked the dogs b*llocks.
A few weeks ago, i noticed that when i pulled up to a jct or had to stop, the revs could sometimes remain high, or gradually increase while stationary.
This saturday morning, things took a turn for the worse, and the revs were really high, and the landrover seemed to have a mind of its own!!.
I was that concerned i thought i better stop and switch off the ignition. Tho when i did, the landrover remained running!!.....i had to stall it to make it stop. Then when i tried to start it again, it wouldnt start???.
A friend towed me to my field, where it remains at the moment.
I'd appreciate any help with what it could be, and what i should check.
Thanks.
Nigel.

Your landy has been consuming it's own engine oil and if you hadn't stalled it when you did It would have self destructed. Don't attempt to restart it until you have fixed the problem. which is usually caused by over filling the engine with oil. check your oil level very carefully and DO NOT overfill

I agree with sean. You were lucky to be able to stall it. Often when it happens, the revs are too high by the time the driver has peace of mind enough to turn the engine off and attempt stalling. This results in a burnt out clutch shortly followed a blown engine.

SEEK IMMEDIATE GARAGE ASSISTANCE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START THE VEHICLE.

i've had a couple in like this - take the sump off and leaving them for a few days to drain down worked, but that's just because they were overfilled - they can run on in cases where rings and seals have gone, no amount of draining will resolve such issues and a rebuild would be needed
