hi guys
any idea on why my 110 19j td struggles to start 1st thing in mornings when warm starts 1st turn
i have cleaned up glow plugs checked fuel lines for leeks new fuel filter

How long do you pre heat the plugs for and how cold a temps are we talking?

Glow plugs are the most likely cause, but the older pre Tdi lumps tend to chug a bit from cold to start. It's just the nature of old school diesels.

ido turn ignition on and off about 4 times but no light comes on dash to say glow plugs on' after that i just hold key till it starts but have to revv it aswel puzzles me when its warn theres no probs runs great and does 70mph fine

If you're getting no glow plug light you need to first check the glow plug fuse and also the glow plug relay which is under the bonnet on the bulkhead behind the block.
Definitely sounds like glow plug related problem. For the sake of a tenner I'd put a new set in while you're at it!

If ur mechanicaly minded you cud put a tester on the feed wire to ur glow plug, and see if its getting power, if you are then see how many seconds it takes from you turn the ignition until the relay cuts the power to the plugs, listen for the relay to click, you can check your glow plugs by taking them out and connecting them to a battery pack or battery to see if they glow, if they don't then they are scrap.

19J wiring doesn't bring the glow-plugs on on an automatic timer like the 200TDi and onwards, you have to hold the key on the spring between positions II and III then the dash light should light up - glow plugs use the lamp with a choke symbol on it (bit like |/|).

The plugs will stay lit for as long as you hold them on for, a good 10-15 seconds should be OK for first thing cold starting. If not try a bit longer.

ye i am mechanical lol just no good with electrics .
cheers for that advice ' 1st thing is relay and fues' then tester mite aswel buy some plugs aswell .. will let you no how it goes.

there is a choke like sign that lights up but onley when engine is turning over...
Go and try holding the key halfway between when the electrics come on and when it starts cranking. Turn the key to position 2 (electrics on) then start turning it slowly against the spring and look for the light and stop and hold the key in that position, as long as the light is lit the plugs are powered. Once its had enough heat (10-15 seconds probably) carry on turning the key to start.

yep on the older LR's you have to hold the key against the spring to activate the glow plugs (basically turn the key as far as you can without activating the starter). An orange light should light up on the dash when you do this, if you release the key the light will go out.

On a cold morning 10-15 secs would be normal, but 20 secs not out of the question. And it might still chug a bit to start.

My 2.5n/a will not start if I go any where near the accelerator pedal, I have to put both feet on the clutch so I'm not tempted lol. It then starts first turn.
Dont know if turbo is the same, someone will know:)

Yes! Never touch the pedal during start up. The fuel pump will provide extra fuel for starting but does not do this if the accelerator is touched.

So the ignition switch on them is like a lucas type that you find on plant machinery.
Similar setup to a lot of plant and tractors, mate. You turn the key up against a spring, hold it for ten seconds and then turn the last bit to engage the starter. Like I said, no throttle on these as you start it.

Wonder if I've been doing it wrong then. Mines a 19j that is now normally aspirated. I find I have to hold it on glow for over 40 secs before cranking. I was told to hold throttle flat out doing so. Always cranks about 8 times before firing when cold. Starts instantly when warm

No throttle with DPS pump as on 19j, throttle is ok with DPA pump as found on Series. It sounds like you have issues with your glow plugs as well. Simple to test or change try a search :)

Tried it out with no throttle and heat for 10-15 secs fires up instantly! As if ive been doing it wrong all this time what a numpty. cheers
