Another update :D

One part of the dash retrimmed with black faux suede

Only thing left to do is put the 3 holes in the centre for gauges but will wait until I've got them.

Tomorrow when the seat box is coming out to get at the chassis i will also remove the rest of the dash to repair/retrim. Then i can start thinking about putting it back in. As well as the defender seats that turnt up today.

Part 2 of the chassis progress. :)

Today involved removing the seatbox and dash although dash is still there in the pictures I'll finish getting it out once I've had a cuppa and a ciggy ;) more to come about the dash later on.....

Anyways first up is a picture is to show you what i faced under the seat box

Continued in the same way as i treated the rear of the chassis starting with jet wash, wire brushes, another wash, and then rust treat followed by paint.

Looks damn good even if i say so myself :D

Seatbox has been cleaned up and ready to go back in, as will the defender seats and the dash once its all nice and pretty:rolleyes:

Next challenge........ Getting the wings off to tackle the rest of the chassis

Bit more for you.

The rest of the dash came out earlier on.

Found folding the windscreen forward made getting the screws on top of the dash much easier to get to. And glad to say the bulkhead seems solid underneath so far as i can tell. Only slight patches of surface rust:)

It was rather interesting retrimming that piece as its fiddly getting the material to sit right to go round corners etc without the lot sticking together in a huge mess but managed it just :D

Now in the process of wire brushing the part that holds on the vent levers and the instrument panel.

Will get pictures of that as it's going in. :) which hopefully should be tomorrow as I've got one small piece to retrim :D

Righty then :)

Brakes bled but still spongy.... Think i may order a new master cylinder for the brakes.
Then possibly new brake cylinders for the front as one bleed nipple is seized solid.
While I'm at it may aswell replace all the flexi's as they look ancient along with a new set of shoes.

Once i got ****ed off with the brakes i went on to cutting out the rotted passenger footwell.

Bleeding series brakes can a bit iffy unless you have the wheel cylinder pistons pushed fully home when they are being bled OR you use a proper compressor fed air bleeder (not one off a hand pump or tyre). The design of the cylinders is a bit sh!t as they leave a gap which traps air and won't bleed out unless you close the gap (push pistons in) or have a decent amount of pressure to suck the air out of the gap (vac bleeder). You can either use a G-clamp to squeeze both pistons in or a ratchet strap on the shoes (if they are on). I have a Draper vac bleeder which runs off my compressor. Its really easy to bleed brakes with it and I recommend one if you have an air line.

Oh yeah, don't buy rubbish brake parts, the seals will go. Get the best you can afford and don't forget to order spare brake lines as they do like to seize and can only be removed via the power of hacksawing them to death.

Cheers for the very helpful advice :)

I didn't realise i had to do that with the brake cylinders. Will give it a go when i get home from work as have one of the bleeders that use tyre pressure. No access to air line yet unfortunately :(

And don't worry i don't tend to buy rubbish, i especially avoid parts that come in blue boxes:p

Finally a small update for anyone who's interested

The weather hasn't really been great since i managed to get the chassis painted under the seatbox. So my plan to get the entire chassis painted failed :(

Although i do have some good news. My retrimmed dash has started to go back in :) almost finishedjust got a few bits here and there to sort out and its done

Another thing i decided to do whilst i had the seatbox and floors out was give it a lick of paint as well :)

Looks much better imo.

Only problem I've found now since the heavy rain is my door seals are completely shot! So hopefully will be replacing these with defender items very soon.

Also i haven't forgotten about the brakes I'm waiting for some g clamps to turn up as i don't own any  so will update the brake situ ation very soon :)

I think its a bit of challenge to stop all rain getting into a series. Mine had bungees attached to the doortops across to the corresponding sunvisor to pull them in when shut. It did help quite a bit but was super Heath Robinson.

I put up with a bit of rain on the drivers floor as it had no carpet and just rubber mats.

Looking good. See you have a hand throttle too, useful to prevent stalling at lights! :D

be aware when changing to defender door seals you have to cut the little lip off around the tub, truck cab and roof in order to do it :)

as in the whole way around the door frame?
i test fitted some defnder ones to mine and couldn't make them stay in place, this might be why.

is it worth doing or do i buy series ones and rivit in place?

Yea i can agree with you it is a challenge but hopefully getting new door tops from rocky mountains should help as well as the defender seals :p might have a leak free series but i doubt it :D

Anything is better than the amount of water getting through atm;)
