Hi I am just wondering if 400 miles out of a tank of fuel would be considerd a good return or about right for a TD4?

I have done the EGR mod, cleaned the manifold, add 250ml of 2 stroke to every tank full and also had an Eco remap.

I am also wondering if I have a dodgy injector because it's lumpy when starting
In morning for about 30 secs and throws out a bit of smoke....... What's the best way to check the injectors and if I do have a dodgy one where should I buy one from for best quality/value.

Thanks all

I sent mine off to a diesel specialist- Lynx Diesels in Woking- and had 4 recon ones off the shelf and balanced for £400 all in. It cost a little more as one of my original injectors was the wrong one! I get almost 600 miles a tank in summer at 44mpg, now I'm doing about 41 mpg in winter. Smooth and smoke free though I might add...

A lot is dependent on the right foot too.. If I do 70mph I get 38mpg average, so I normally stick to 65. I don't fly up to that speed either, although it certainly shifts when I want it too...

Yeah I think around 65 is where I get the best mpg but still think I am only getting mid 30's to the gallon.

Just wondering if the injectors could be at fault?

what sort of journey's are you doing within the 400 miles..

if its none stop then you potentially have an issue,
if its 80 x 5 mile journey's your doing very well indeed..

I do all 5 mile journey's and fill up at 1/4 left and am getting
240-280 miles, depending on right foot being heavy or not
I am averaging in the last 12 months 27.33 mpg..
not bad for such short journey's..

on one long run I got 34.6 (175 miles) but that was at about 80 mph..

P.S used my Christmas Present as a Sat Nav and it showed that when the needle
in on 70 mph,
I am actually travelling at 65-66 mph
so the reason you think that 60-65 is the best place is because it is,
actually around 56-60 where all cars give there best returns..
as quoted by manufactures and the government..

I need to drop 5-7 mph off my speed and get up there slower,
then I may get above 40 mpg on a fun myself..

Although Parker only quote 32mpg as best for the Td4 Auto..

My overall average is just over 32mpg, with all the above mods, other than I have s Ronbox.

I also generally get about 400 miles to the tank.

I do lots of short journeys in mine, anywhere between 1 & 15 miles, generally over 3. Also driving in congested South London most of the time.

I have a knocking sound which is I think an injector going, and a bit of smoke.

I am very wary of independent refurbished injectors. I have been looking at getting factory Bosch refurb ones.

Hi again fellas...... Yeah that's a point I am probably only doing 60 mph on long runs!!!!

I would say I am doing a mix of long journeys on the motorway of up to 20 miles at a constant 60 and short bounds of 5-8 miles at varying speeds so I think maybe I am not doing too bad.

So - reading all the above, as my usual journey is about a mile and a half to work early morning then same back tea-time ish, the 32 mpg or so I'm getting isn't too bad at all ! It's a 2001 TD4 manual.

On short bounds with a manual box I would say mid 30's would be decent enough ;0)

I think if I took this down to the south coast I would get 500 miles out of the tank.

Erm, you drive a mile and a half to work and back..? Has sir considered walking to prevent killing the poor Freelander...? ;)

I just thought as a manual it should be returning about 40 to the gallon especially with the mods I have done.
Lead boot and short runs will seriously affect fuel consumption. My P38 has a long term average of 24mpg but I can easily get it below 20mpg if I change my driving style and in the UK with the traffic and short runs 18mpg is the norm.:)
