Noticed, on my 2 TD4s at least, that when the fuel gauge is on 1/4 full it takes 45.5 L to fill the car. Therefore 10 gallons. So fill up, zero trip and when it reaches 1/4 full the mileage divided by 10 will be the mpg average. Tried it with the fill up and measure and it works!! Well I thought it was handy anyway!!
