Motor dies then Gearbox fault message comes up on 2.5 diesel

Hi all. Ive got a problem with "The Blue Pig" again.
I set off to go out in it tonight up the hill out of our village and the engine started to lose power, (2.5 diesel, auto). As soon as the engine stopped, Gearbox fault message came up on the dash.
It restarted eventually, drove 100 yards and cut out again.....same message. I drove it this afternoon it was perfect.
Can anyone offer any suggestions pleeeeeeeeeese? :(:(:(

The gearbox fault is only cos the engine had cut out while it was still moving in gear.Try a new fuel filter or maybe intank pump is duff
 
Check and clean all your earth connections, yes a bad earth will cause this fault, going from park to drive would stop my engine and giving me fault message on the dash.

I know it sounds strange but we are talking a P38 here.

I forgot to say it was the earth connection next to the alarm, ( on a right hand drive} i removed it and connected it to one of the bolts that hold the slam pannelo the vehicle.

Hiya folks. Thanks all for your input. Just to put a lid on this one. I couldn't be arsed going messing with it in this ****ty weather so I called the AA out. Brilliant service. they texted and rang me when they were going to arrive, they were on the nose with times. The bloke who turned up was actually from Jaguar Land Rover Service, The AA use them for JLR cars while, more often or not, they are a specialised bit of kit.
Turns out the fuel was low in the tank. Unusually for me I had let the level drop to under a quarter of a tank and they sometimes get a problem with the pick up pipe from the intank pump breaking or dropping off or blocking. So we put some fuel in, bled it and it was away. I've just filled it up now and its running spot on.
So join the AA, you get exclusive JLR Roadside Service.

Sounds like your in tank pump is shot.

Must have been totally empty. AA bloke is talking crap. There is no pickup pipe in the tank other than the filter on the pump motor itself. Which sits inside it's cap directly on the floor of the tank. Fuel sender is obviously duff if it was registering fuel.
