Hi all
Having just started resurrecting my recent acquisition I'm wondering if an 1982 Series 3 is checked for emissions for the MOT. Anyone know please.

Thanks in anticipation.

Yes I think it will be as my Scirocco GTI mk1 1980 is tested. Get a Gunsons exhaust gas analyser! They are reasonably cheap and quite accurate Regards. Chris

Yes it will be, mine is also '82 and they tested that. Although I have been using the garage for years and they appreciate older vehicles, so they were very gentle when they did the test and I scored incredibly low.

I hope the garage that does my MOT are similarly "gentle" :)
It smokes a bit on start-up but clears as it warms up. I reckon hardened valve stem seals?

my understanding was that vehicles over a certain age get a visual test can't remember now what that date is, but I took my smokey old '72 lez exempt diesel s3 to one place - around 6 years ago and they gave it a full analysis and also proved to be fairly cun tish on everything so I never went back :D I think one of my first posts on here was moaning about them and the screen washers.

I have taken it to other places since and it passed emissions and I didn't get one of those print outs (although they could have stuck it on the analyser just to check, I never watch the vehicle being done)

I don't mind people being strict but I think the guy must have had a barney with the doris on the way in :D

from the gov site, I think yours is not old enough for a visual;

Emissions testing

You can’t get an MOT certificate if your vehicle’s exhaust emissions are too high. Emissions may also be tested as part of a roadside check.

MOT

Most vehicles have their exhaust emissions tested as part of the MOT.

Usually, they’re tested using a meter. Petrol vehicles used before August 1975 and diesel vehicles used before August 1979 are tested by sight.

If your vehicle fails the emission test it fails the MOT. The problem must be fixed before you can get an MOT certificate.

The only vehicles that don’t have an emissions test as part of the MOT are:
vehicles with less than 4 wheels
those with 2-stroke engines
hybrid vehicles
quadricycles

Thanks for the replies guys and gals.
I just found the government site which states that my Landy requires a visual and an emissions check for CO2 and hydrocarbons at tickover when the engine is at normal operating temp.

Gulp! Fingers crossed when it goes for the test :(

Is the emissions test for age of vehicle or age of engine? For instance will a series 2 with tdi have just a visual check or a proper emissions test?

My series 3 is a 71 and it had to have an emissions test for its mot but this may also be because the garage i took it to didn't have series land rovers in their mot computer they just had defenders so they had to fool around with it and input the make and model/engine size manually but when the came to test the emissions the set it to the 2.5n/a diesel engine as i have the diesel 2.25n/a. I don't know if this effect the emissions target the engine has to meet but it may have done.
