Just had my 95 V8 MOT'd. I wasn't surprised it failed as it has the standard tin worm on the rear inner arches. But as the weather has been so crap I wasn't able to give the truck a good look over for other things that may need rectifying. Because of that I decided to put it in for the test and let them tell me what I needed.

Very pleased that there aren't any other rust problems just a few relatively minor things, two discs need replacing, exhaust blow and some bulbs blown. However one has me a stumped, the nearside headlamp works on dip but switches to sidelight when put to main beam. Is this a straight bulb replacement or...?

Finally does any one knows of a decent welder in the Portsmouth/Chichester area?

This is another old Disco that isn't going to the scrappie!!

Ignore the bit about the headlamp, I've been used to cars with twin headlamps and had a stupid moment.:behindsofa:

Still need a welder though.

hire one, it only takes a few mins to learn how to do basic welding even a monkey could do it :D

My disco failed for both sills and the rear body mounts, i have not welded since collage but took it as an oper-chancity to buy more tools! Get some scrap to practice its not too hard just take your time also hire your gas from BOC its alot cheaper than those stupid little bottles. Plus lets face it there is only going to be more welding from here on in!

I know a good guy in Lancing,if that's not too far-does a lot of Landies and Transits etc-very good rates. PM me if you want his number.

Cheers all,

im assuming he doesnt have one and doesnt want the expense of buying one, they are very cheap to hire

I've never welded before but intend to learn, No garage or driveway space at the moment to attempt the job.

two discs need replacing???

What was the reason for failing it on discs??

Pitted

Thanks, will do

Thats not a reason for a failure if they work you can't fail it only advise

But it would if the pitting/corrosion was bad enough to compromise braking efficiency or be a hazard to driving the car ... see post 11 ... I was right:p ;)

Correct, but it would then fail on braking efficiency not corroded/pitted discs this would still be an advisary:p:p I was shocked:eek: when i went on my NT course and when speaking to VOSA just how bad discs and other items have to be before I can fail them.

Isn't there a minimum width discs can be?

From my own point of view I am not too worried about replacing the discs, it's not as though they are wads of money.

As I am taking it off the road for the next month or so I intend to replace all the discs and pads together with brake pipes and hoses. I'll also be taking the opportunity to do other remedial work not covered by the MOT.

It may sound stupid but I am quite pleased with the result of the MOT, what I didn't want was loads of stuff I wasn't aware of which may have forced me to think about selling for spares or repair. I want to keep this one for a while yet.

In the meantime it's back to my other toy a 1990 Merc 300TE-24.

Yes most brake discs have a min thickness unfortunatly that has absolutely nothing do do with the MOT, on the course i was on the lecturer showed us a disc and asked pass or fail?? it was a vented disc under cut about 4mm on each side and badly pitted/corroded 90% including myself said fail, why he said? cos its foooooked i replied, he asked what you failing it for? cos it's fooooked, he asked me if i thought it would still work? well yes it would but, but nothing if it works (brake efficiency) then its a pass and advise end of.

You're quite right, the MoT tester can't put "pitted discs" as a reason for failure. You'll get a rather ambiguous "Service brake efficiency below requirements" reason for rejection. However if you talk to the tester, he might well say that its due to pitted discs. It could also be due to sticking/seized calipers, need bleeding, etc.
