MOT Fail

Well not as bad as could be. He failed on :-
Nearside and offside front upper and lower steering pivot point has excess play. Think this is the swivel housing bearings, so will try to remove some shims.
Rear a frame ball joint. Speaks for itself.
Panard ball joint worn. He showed me and I think it is actually the drop arm ball joint. Its the arm that comes off the steering box on a splined bar.
Now to me these jobs look easy enough to do but the garage ( a very very well known and respected 4x4 specialist) quoted £300 labour only.I have to source parts. Now if I compare the jobs to the price am I heading for a world of brown sticky stuff if I attempt these jobs on my back in the drive????????????:doh:

The shims are easy enough to adjust on the swivels, Just follow th emanual and you cant go wrong, Best to adjust them with the seal removed, Shims if required are about 10 -15 pence each if you require any.

The ball joint(drop arm ball joint) can be a bugger to replace the ball joint in position, Removing the drop arm can be a bugger of a job or sometimes they just fall off. It diesnt take long to rplace the ball joint the hard bit is getting the circlip in, I use a small puller to help with this and then refitt.

If everything goes ok should only take about an hour and a half

Thanks. Have looked at busters photos as well. Looks like the only pain is getting the drop arm off. Think I will get a repair kit and drop arm, just take back what I dont use.

Sometimes it is easier just to get the full arm with the ball joint fitted, But please get a quality ball joint, some of the cheap parts out there are shocking.
In the past i broke the legs of a 10ton hydraulic puller trying to remove a drop arm, But the drop arm on my current 90 drops off if you look at it the wrong way, Im not complaining easy when you have to change the drop arm ball joint
