Well I've got the head off the offending side.

Bad news, snapped a manifold stud.

Good news, Piston is fine, Valve has a "V" burnt in it which has
clearly been there since before I got Morph given the milage I do and
the size of it... It's encroaching on the valve stem it's SOOOO big.

I will mount the offending valve on a wooden Plinth with a plaque
sayiing "Listen to Dad!" , He's only been saying it for about 3 years!

:)

So I just need to get the tuther side off tomorrow when time allows
and then both heads are off for some recon work once I get a
replacement valve.

Richard! Any other bits I should be getting done at the same time for
the parts list?

If it were me I'd be doing the usual stuff like checking valve
guides, changing the stem seals (not that everyone fits them
on V8's) and an oil change..... and have a good long look at
the camshaft and tappets.

Ok...

Cams - is there any sure fire way of checking these. To a naked eye
inspection the Cam looked ok.... but then again what exactly am I
looking for?

Also I understand the timing cover may be differenton 101's but could
be wrong. Are there gaskets easily available or am I likely to create
a problem trying to solve one that may not exist.

As for the valve guides how do I check these? Is it a wiggle thing?
I'll probably whip it all down to the local engineers to be done. It's
got to go anyway for a number of threads for the exhaust manifold to
be sorted (helicoil probably) and also a stud which needs removing and
no doubt similar treatment.

If I can send the heads with the bits to be done that would be peachy.

Are 101 Valves any different? I'll need one exhaust valve at least.

but doubt it as the compression test seemed ok)
4. Head gaskets. (Do you need any numbers for the right ones? Notches
or stuff like that??)
5. s shaped hose from the water pump to the inlet manifold.
6. Set of valve guides (in for a penny!)
7. Stem oil seals ??? (why don't some fit them? Discuss.... :0) )
8. Do I need new head bolts???
9. Large pot of ready mixed luck.

Can you not buy a head gasket set which will come with all the gaskets
you need along with the ones you always forget about?

they look ****ed if they are. Look at the top of the pointy end of the cam,
it should be a smooth fairly small diameter curve with a flat profile
side-to-side. If it's chamfered at all at the edges, it's bad. Also check
that they all look about the same height.

yep. The valve shouldn't wiggle from side to side. a very small amount of
wiggle is acceptable if you're working to a budget. Anything more'n about 3
or 4 thou' is too much, really, although it'll still run; it'll just burn
oil.

There is a school of thought in the Yahoo 101 Group that the reason
many of the LH exhaust manifolds fracture is because of poor casting
and the lack of an insulator between the Ally and the Cast.

Given the manifolds are rare as rocking horse droppings I'll fit them
and risk it. But you are right , It's didn't have any.

I thought that the engines were normal? (its just the owners who
arnt...)

You can come round and do the water pump on mine when youre done if

Realistically you won't know about the valves until someone's had a go
at refacing them. If it were me doing the job I'd replace all the
exhaust valves - once they're refaced the margin on them often gets
pretty narrow which increases the chances of burning a valve in future.
And it's not like they are an expensive item either.

The 101 V8 is to all intents and purposes the same as early Range Rover/
Stage I V8.

There is a head set - but not with the composite gaskets.

Exhaust valves are the same as all carb V8's (and earlier Efi's).

Manifold gaskets - the purpose of of the gaskets is, in addition to
being gas-tight, to allow for any irregularities in the mating surfaces,
that's why the V8 ones are that funny "crushable" material. The designers
didn't select the material out of a lucky dip box!

1. composite valley gasket.

2. Them there rubber seals that go either end of the valley gasket.
(101 Parts manual lists GEG645 2 off)

3. exhaust valve, 1 off ,101 part number 602165 (just incase it's a
odd'un)

4. Head gaskets Pair. (Do you need any numbers for the right ones?
Notches
or stuff like that??)

5. s shaped hose from the water pump to the inlet manifold. 101 parts
no 614435 (thermostat bypass hose)


6. Set of valve guides (in for a penny!), 101 parts number 603554 , 16
off

7. Do I need new head bolts???

8. Exhaust manifold gaskets pretty standard stuff.

9. Pair of rocket cover gaskets (101 parts number GEG436)

10. Exhaust manifold locking tabs , 8 off, 101 parts number 90613659

11. Exhuast manifold bolts, 4 off, 101 parts number lists as 253048
(3/8" UNC x11/8")

Can you fix me up with these?

Smashing. ASAP is cool, I will get the heads cleaned up over the
weekend then hope to drop them off at a machine shop next week if I
can get the bits soon enough.

Half term so I'll be entertaining the kids and Mrs D and trying to
resist all landrover jobs for a week at least. That would work in nice
with the refurb work then... thats plans a anyway :0)
