P38A More door latch woes

The drivers side door latch has gone kaput. There was a snap and the outside handle just pulls all the way out and nothing engages the latch mechanism inside the door.

Got a couple of photo's from inside the door - which are difficult to take - but can any of the experts on here work out what broke, and which part I need to buy, if available, to fix it?

I'm hoping there is some plastic widget that joins the door latch assembly to the rod that pulls the knee joint connected to the thigh bone connected to the hip joint..... thingy.

One of the rods is flopping about all over the show.

I know I have seen other posts on this subject - but the search isn't working so I can't locate them, which is a shame.

Is this case of removing the door handle to get to the root of the problem?

Take the outside handle off and the problem will be obvious, I plumped for a second-hand handle when mine went tits up.
