My TD5 produces a rather loud vibration at 2150rpm when cold and pulling up a short hill near home. I was told it is characteristic of the breed but my informant could not say what causes it. Once warm the vibration is not repeated.
The vehicle has done 275k/kms and has exhibited this trait since new. I have found nothing worn or chafed or broken.
Any views please?

Could it be to do with the glow plugs? Five cylinders and only four plugs, so it can run a little rough when cold.
You don't say if it's an auto box - the gear changes can come in at different engine loads when cold. If it is an auto, try putting it in sport mode and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks Pastmaster. It is an auto.
To amplify the circumstances: it starts well, all firing and pulls well from cold. As I live on a farm, we travel lightly down the access road for 500metres before hitting the public road and the hill. As there is no subsequent hill before reaching normal temp I have no chance to replicate the event. The vibration is at 2150 and not either side of it and sounds as if there is something happening in the exhaust down pipe.

I'm a bit stumped then. There is a known problem to do with the exhaust and a heat shield on the gearbox which cometh lose and rattleth. Mine makes an alarming rattling noise sometimes at about 25mph but I've never been sufficiently alarmed to check it out. Have a look for signs of rubbing on exhaust near gearbox?
