Think I may know the answer from other threads already but would appreciate a little help with our used Freelander which we have just purchased ! My wife picked up her 98 Freealnder 1.8XEi on Sunday after being MOT'd day before (no problems) and oil and filter change. When test driven last week, thought engine was bit rattly but put this down to age and mileage (89k) and reputation of these engines being on noisy side. Car has been maintained by maindealer since new and has had normal freelander engine problems in past which have all been dealt with over years (head gasket/ overheating etc.) at some cost to previous owner and all details on main dealer print out. Anyway since oil change the car seems noticably noisier around cylinder head and since topping up coolant white smoke has started to appear, though don't seem to be losing coolant to any great degree. Any ideas please or are worst fears about new head gasket likely to be true ?

Many thanks

(nervous new owners!)
