There are some good mod land for of roading. the change thay as been in the pipe line for years know there going over to man trucks thay where thinking of G wagonsto take over the landrover

Maybe the MOD should pay for the squaddies to go to a few pay and play sites to learn about mud and water etc..

Maybe you should try driving a fully laden 110 with 3 lads in the back with full battle kit and full weapon system lashed to the side with a trailer in tow carrying spare missiles, and enough kit to last a week in the field, there a ****ing nightmare.

As much as I love landys they aren't up to it out there. You can't blame the car though because the snatch land rover was only ever intended to go to Ireland. It's a case of using the wrong kit for the job and then the kit looks bad when it fails.

It's sad to see that the Landy is beeing replaced, but at the end of the day if it dont work, it got to be sorted, its a shame its not a Landy from SVO, but the up side its supplied by a British Compay.

as long as it saves live's i am all for it, I just hope that in the battle field it does what it says on the tin.

and just think how many ex-mod landies should be coming on the market back in the uk,

I would have one if the price was right, after all even if they have been destroyed by squaddies all it will need as a rebuild will be everything else you replace on a standard one when you buy one and its rotted away because it has been sat in mud all its life.

As for them not being fit for purpose then i strongly believe the guys out there putting life and limb on the line should have whatever the best kit is for the job regardless of where it comes from.

Patriotism is all well and good but lives are more important.

Well, the military's loss is our gain. Hopefully we will see some more cheap ex mods out soon. But what I don't understand is the fact that the landys are being replaced by a vehicle much larger and heavier, which will presumably make them difficult in soft terrain.

this confused me too, heavier and not as quick??

The landies were never designed for the role they are currently undertaking and it always annoys me when I see a news report that the landie gets the blame!!!

Landies have always done the MOD well, even in the modern scenarios, that comment was posted by a coroner, someone who given the tools to do the job wouldn't know what the **** to do with them, yes i agree at times the Landy would be stuck, but tbh so would anything light & loaded up with double it's weight.

The downside of the Landy is the IED, it wasn't designed for it and these days the majority of deaths in combat are a result of non contact scenarios, even in NI the explosives used weren't as powerful as what they use in the middle east ( thanks to the yanks for that ).

I'm really glad the troops are starting to get some decent gear, but this news is going to take years before the actual items are in service and bedded in with those who need it, this should've been forwarded 4 years ago when the designs and tests were completed for the Ocelote, typically it was politics that over shadowed the results of the troops getting what they needed.

My dad does a lot of work with military vehicles and according to him: primarily in order to make it a lot safer it needs a v-shaped bottom like a boat to deflect IEDs from underneath. Sadly this isn't a viable solution without totally re-designing the Snatch landy from chassis up. Shame they can't stick with LR but on the plus side, cheap 90s galore for us and safer troops :D

I think you might find that lots will be left out in afghanistan its cheaper to write them off as war stock than to bring them back to the uk.
When my old regiment left Bosnia we left about 20 landys, 3 daf 4 tonne trucks and a saxon apc, when we got back to the uk we had a new fleet waiting for us.
We just left them parked in the dock in ploce, croatia after filling the engines with sand / water / acid pretty much anything really to wreck them.

This is very true. I watch a lot of sciency/war/explosives programs and this theme comes up a lot. It's a big problem for the Humvee because of how big they are and the bottoms are totally flat. If a bomb goes off under them, They just go flying into the air.

I'm not suprised yer landy breaks so often if that's how you go about maintainance:p:D:D

well at least the Ocelot vehicle is being made here would not like guess what duration that would be ,Land Rover soon to be made in India so we are told, it will not affect British plants or job. similar story when China bought Rover on default by one Chinese government owned company drops out of buying Rover and then another Chinese owned company buys it when its in receivership Promises of producing cars at Longbridge
lets hope the build quality is higher than commonwealth game complex and the Indian L series cast blocks of which most were scrapped too costly to send back
May be they should knight Mr Towers he started the ball rolling they knighted Mr Dyson when he closed a factory here and moved it to Malaysia more cash return F--ck the British Workers .
RANT OVER
