Dear all,

I've learnt a hell of a lot from reading this forum and don't ask a lot of questions as searching has produced the answers to so many if my problems. I'm not mechanical by profession and my 110 is part transport part hobby. However I've hit a stubbing block and can't find the answer.

I have purchased the 2x side and 3x rear window guards for my 110 from Mobile Storage Systems.
The small rear quarter guards come with partial instructions. But I would appreciate your thoughts on what the best method of fixing is.

The rear main window has no instructions. When I called the company they said it was self explanatory and to use self tapping screws. Any more specific advice would be much appreciated.

Finally the rear side window guards have brackets with them and 2 grainy photo copied pictures but otherwise absolutely no instructions.

All and any advice on how exactly to fit this kit would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to take the family inc the dog away in a weeks time and need the guards for the dog so I can have the windows open.

Many thanks in advance.

Joe.

To be honest it really is that simple.
Just offer the guard up to the window, Mark the holes, Drill holes.
The fixings to use is debatable.
If you're ever going to want to remove them use screws.
Or rivets if they're going to be a permanent fixture.
Personally I prefer screws, But rivets offer more security.

Dear aaronmorris

Ok great. Will do. Happy to mark and drill for fixings.
Follow up numpty question, re screws.

I'm assuming Self tapping and stainless steel but do I need anything behind them like a clip or bracket? Also I'm assuming 10mm is long enough.

Thanks again for the advice, I'm an emergency nurse and self teaching the more mechanical aspects of life.

Joe.

Stainless self tappers will be fine, They will bite into the ally so no need for a clip behind.
10mm should be long enough, Only needs to reach through the ally panel.

Maybe I am missing something hear but how will self tapping screws through a thin aluminium panel to hold on a guard offer any sort of security?
The mesh on the guard will probably offer sufficient purchase to pull it off with your hands ripping the self tapping screws out of the panel.:scratching_chin:

if you can get to the back of it use nuts and bolts

Using nuts and security bolts and a large washer on the inside would greatly increase its security potential but using self tapping screws its not worth the time to fit the guards.

But he never mentioned fitting them for security reasons?
Self tapping screws are stronger than you'd think, Had them on mine (not fitted by me) and you certainly wasn't going to rip them of with your hands

Having them because "leaving the windows open" sounds like security to me.
Either stopping the dog letting it's self out or some lowlife letting themselves in when the windows are open.
The rear windows do not open so that then will be to either enhance the look of the vehicle or security.
What ever the reason self tapping screws are not up to a job of security.

Defenders are so easily stolen for just a little extra work which is involved to adequately secure the new guards make it harder for the low life to remove your property

YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE ;)

I'm not disagreeing with regards to security, I thought it was purely for the dog not getting out. But that's why I said rivets in my original post ;)

Either way, If the guards were screwed on or bolted on I'd just open the door with a bent spoon
