Missing output shaft nut on two LT77s, is this a bodge?

Hello all. A curiousity.....A couple of years ago I bought a LT77/230 combo, with the idea of rebuilding the LT77. It turned out the LT77 was BER, with missing teeth and a FUBAR input shaft. The output shaft nut was also missing. This afternoon, I thought I'd check the state of the output shaft teeth on the existing box. The teeth looked OK, but the output shaft nut was missing again. Is this some kind of well known bodge to the LT77? Seems like a strange co-incidence. It's driving fine, with no strange behaviour or noise beyond what you'd expect.
