Missing bolt on rear of sump

Was under the 300tdi yesterday and noticed there was a bolt hole directly below a pulley at the rear of the sump (or was it at the front of the sump mmm cant remember now) anyway it looks like a 3/4 thread but there was no bolt in it, do you know what it is and does it serve any purpose, if your not sure where i mean i will post a pic.

They're drain holes to stop your timing belt (at the front) and your clutch(at the back) from getting contaminated by any leaked oil. You can put a plug in them to stop water getting in if you plan on doing any wading but otherwise just leave them open. Do a search for "wading plug".
