Probably just trying to figure out if his own car is a bit thirsty or not.

Darn in Kent the term is juicy mate very juicy when asked what their car does to the gallon, or the other answer is, doesnt go far on 20 quid:D

I asked our new workmate who commutes 43 miles each way what his mpg of the diesel Focus was, his answer? dont know! come on you are doing 400 plus miles per week you can be very accurate without even trying?

Maybe your workmate isn't getting as many mpg as hoped out of the small diesel, thus he is too embarrassed to say. Fuel being the cost it is today most drivers keep a check on the mpg, I'd be surprised if he doesn't know.

Could be but as most of his trip is pretty decent roads he should be getting pretty good mpg, I would hazard a guess at50mpg without trying to hard.
Doing the miles he is my top requirement form a car would be excellent mpg over almost everything else.

Agreed absolutely! When we were replacing my wife's last vehicle, we decided on a petrol powered Mitsubishi Mirage that consistently gives 50 plus mpg on ulp 91, and as we regularly do round trips to Cairns and back from home, a distance total of 360 miles, the little Mitsi saves us heaps on fuel compared to our old Disco D1 that now gets to stay in the garage unless going bush, fuel/running costs are something I consider most important nowdays.

First you gotta fill it ...

I used to put a tiger in the tank but found his Frosties wrecked the pump and blocked the filter.

I'd guess he knows how much it's costing in relation to other cars or transport but hasn't a clue how to convert to mpg or doesn't consider it relevant.
