Hi all

I have just purchased a 96 V8i disco, seem to be getting only 300km out of a
tank of gas !!!!.

Is this normal, I have been driving it very carefully and dont do any city
driving.

Interested in thoughts.

I'd expect you to get 320 miles at a push, I did once see 340 (with a
very bright fuel warning light in the middle of the countryside with a
very pregnant wife - nervous, nah...).

On a good run you should be looking for 20 mpg if gentle, dropping to
14 mpg if you push it and / or live somewhere hilly.

What quality fuel are you using? In the UK we'd be running on 95
octane and using proper gallons of course... You talk of 'gas' which
suggests the US, but talk of 'km', which suggest Europe or
Australia....

doubt it.

however...

the 3.9 is reckoned to get better mileage than the 3.5, unless you use the
extra power. I imagine the 4.0 ("thor") might do better still if properly
serviced etc., thanks to a better engine management system, but you're
talking marginal gains there.

driven tidily, my 3.5 returns almost 18 mpg on petrol on a run. Normally
get about 13 mpg on LPG, slightly more if driven gently on a long journey,
but only slightly.

My '97 Disco does twice as much - about 15l/100 when crusing highway @90
km/h. When pulling trailer with another Disco (minus engine) on snowvy road
consumption was about 25l/100. City cycle and minor trailer hauling falls in
between of those two.
You have a lot of of Discovering joy, when you check all those O2 sensors,
plugs, etcetc. Starting from cheapest part - air filter.

We've got a 2001 v8 disco and get about 16 litres/100km in the city and
13L/100km on country driving/freeways in Australia. Don't know how this
works out in mpg but that's about average with fuel consumption for other
4WD of a similar size here. We use premium unleaded - the more expensive
unleaded, which is around AU$1.10/litre - not sure what that is in pounds
per gallon. This should get some of you mathematicians busy! If you can
work it out I'd love to know.

I have 2 US Discos. MPG/US gallons. The 2000 gets around 18 on the
highway/16 city. The 1995 D1 gets about 15 highway/14 city. It used
to get 14/13 before the 4.6 engine upgrade. 300K on a tank sounds a
bit short for '96.
