2. When a child can travel without a car seat

A child can travel without a child car seat in some circumstances.
Taxis and minicabs (private hire vehicles)

In a licensed taxi or minicab:
  • children under 3 years of age can travel without a child’s car seat or seat belt, but only on the back seat
  • children aged 3 years or older can travel without a child’s car seat if they wear an adult seat belt
Unexpected journeys

If the correct child seat isn’t available, a child over 3 years of age can use an adult seat belt if the journey is all of the following:
  • unexpected
  • necessary
  • over a short distance

there it is again

define emergency ?? could be the mrs is late from work and you have to pick up the kids, could be the mrs has the booster seats in her car. could be any number of things.

very true, personally i never did it when the kids were young, i had two sets of booster seats one for each car, not worth the risk.. doesn't matter how carefully you drive all it needs is one idiot to run into you

What is the legality of having kids in the rear of the defender with side facing seats do you need to have 3 point harnesses

Child seats are not designed to be used in side facing seats, so you cannot use them. The law states that children over 3 must use a child seat unless it is not suitable to fit one, as is the case with side facing seats. They can also sit in the rear of a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt if no seatbelt is fitted. Children under 3 cannot be seated in a side facing seat, unless for short trips in an emergency. There are also no requirements for seatbelts to be fitted to side facing seats.

Im just looking into getting my first defender and my main concern is around this middle seat at the moment, is it possible in a 90 to fit a child seat in the passenegr seat and one in the middle seat with myself driving? Im looking at getting a 90 with just the 3 front seats and my first job would be to fit a seat in the back but i will have a period of time with just the front 3. I only have my kids on a weekend and make short trips with them so as long as they fit im laughing! Appreciate any advice.

i believe legally you can have a passenger in the center seat, but its not comfortable,

As for a child seat I believe legally it has to be on a 3 point seat belt not the lap belt

Thanks Jonny, its looking more and more like i need to go for the sensible 110 for the room. I expect a baby seat in the middle would make driving horrendous anyway!

How does it work with a child seat in the rear middle on a lap belt in a car?
As for room my dog sometimes sits in the middle and there is plenty of room

Just to add a spanner, can you not fit an isofix kit to the third or both middle and passenger seats?

Although, I guess kits would be perfectly safe, they wouldn't be type approved

It depends on the car seat to if it needs a 3 point belt or not.

ones with no integral harness need a 3 point.
This with an integral harness may not.
in general, from what I found with a previous motor, where I ended up with three kids and the centre seat a lap belt.

Group 0/0+ some can/cant be used with a lap belt
Group 1 only seats generally CAN be used with a lap belt.
above this they are usually used with the car belt as a child restraint,
Group 1-3 seats have a built in harness for the group 1 stage but must be used with a 3 point belt as the back splits to use as a booster later.

Thank god I have no kids and only 2 seats. Sounds like a fricking nightmare.
The dogs bed goes between my 2 front seats as I have nothing there. Everytime I change gear she licks my hand......

I reminded my grandaughter to belt up when she got in the landy, why? she said, If we hit anything with this we aint gonna stop are we:)

This seems a common problem.

I have my 3 year old's car seat in the passenger seat and the mrs sits in the middle seat.
But with another baby due in march I dont think she would fit it the middle now!! Or i'd only be able to use 1st, 3rd and 5th:D

How would you stand legaly with fitting a forward facing seat in the rear of a 90? Im guessing MOT or Ministry inspection of some sort as well as changing no. of seats on V5??
