Metalled roads?

Hi there,

What's the difference between green lanes and metalled roads? (below) They often consist of tracks, much like green lanes. Is there any real difference?

Google images shows mixed results for "metalled road". However, it's the roads like below which often tend to be signposted as "metalled roads":

Hi Rich... metalled roads, as far as I understand it, are those roads that are tarmacced. Some roads, as shown on the OS maps, though officially country lanes, are not tarmacced. Green lanes is a generic term that refers to rights of way that vehicles have legitimate access to... that are usually not tarmacced.

Dunno why I said metalled roads. I meant unmetalled roads.

ok, well in that case.... unmetalled roads wouldl constitute a subset of green lanes - unmettalled road, along with a numbewr of other rights of way, make up the UK green lanes. "Green Lane" is not a formal title; it is a generally used term that describes a lot of different things.
