Heading down to Mauritania in January, does anyone have info on the current situation since the coup in August. We are also having problems getting visas since they closed the embassy in London any info on the best aproach would be appreciated (Mauri embassy in Paris vs Rabat) or just take your chances on the Western Sahara border?

Am guessing you might have already checked it, but if not take a look at the FCO site: FCO official travel advice for Mauritania
You're a braver man than I Derek, you really should read the linked page, but here's some of the highlights:
Following a military coup on the morning of 6 August 2008, we advise against all but essential travel to Mauritania... There is a high threat from terrorism throughout Mauritania... There is a high threat of kidnapping in Mauritania by Al Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb...
Good luck with your trip mate! :)
