master cylinder/clutch issue.

Evening Folks,
I've changed the clutch master cylinder on my 90 this afternoon because the old one was leaking fluid down the pedal, when I was bleeding it up I had a bit of trouble getting the pedal to pump any fluid through with the nipple open. I managed in the end to get it to pump the fluid but the pedal is only working from about half way down, it selects all the gears fine with no crunching etc but the pedal seems to be doing very little for the first half of the stroke. When I put the new cylinder on I measured roughly where the two lock nuts were and fitted the new one in approximately the same place in relation to the one I was taking off, I was thinking that may be the threaded rod that slides through the pedal to act on the piston may need adjusting to take up a bit of the free play at the start of the stroke by winding the nuts further down the threaded part, in effect pushing the rod in slightly before the peddle is pressed. Does this sound feasible, or can anyone shed any light on what might help, many thanks in advance EwdMucker.

Slacken off locknuts and let the internal spring in the master cylinder push the rod fully out. Then tighten locknuts keeping rod in same position. You should have a little free play in pedal when it is operated. This will set cylinder stroke.

Doing 'nothing' for half the stroke sounds like still some air in there to me - I'd give the bleeding another go after letting it settle overnight to get any air up to the top of the system....? I 'cheated' last time and forced fluid up from the bottom slave nipple (big cow syringe and tube with no air in it....) til it filled the master reservoir - an idea from a friend and worked a treat, but may have been fluke..... and prob to be frowned upon?? A

I've managed to get a decent peddle which up to now seems ok. (Fingers crossed) the idea of filling the system from the bottom seems like a good one to me, and if it works then surely that's a good thing. I will give that a try if i need to do one again.
