Mass air flow

Hi all my MAFM doesn't have any mesh in it. Now what would be the complications of this. it has blown out due to a backfire when LPG stuck on. Also there's this one

the mesh is there to stop damage to the sensor thats all. it takes the current reading from 2 places to work out the airflow via the ambiant air temp sensor.
It's clever enough to work out the speed of the air by how much current it is taking to keep a constant temp compared to the sensor which doesn't have air flowing around it.

all very clever for something simple eh!!
