Yes, engine needs to be running, I think. Don't suppose a short distance would hurt.

4wheel tow = Place fuse (above 5 amp) in position 11, turn ignition to pos 2, allow transfer box to select neutral, ignition to pos 1 and place main gearbox in neutral
2 wheel tow = Remove Propshaft for axle left on ground.....

Missus has been towed home by the RAC a few times using the 4-wheel tow method. Pretty certain they kept the engine running. Maybe it kept the steering lock off and free.

If you are towing it anywhere on four wheels put the transfer box in neutral.
