Hi all

New 110 member and I am looking at adding some chequered plates to the bonnet and sides. I began looking at the mammoth plates but getting the side of the bonnet, the sides and the 2 rear edges done was close to £300 (with gaskets for the bonnet plates). Looking at other brands this can be done for half that price. Is the mammoth plate really worth the mark up?

Thanks
Nick.

You planning on jumping up and down on it like a LOON?

Plus chequer looks rubbish if overdone,IMO.........LOL.

Cheers

Fair point. My main reason was to protect the door sills.

From what? You have rock sliders.

Do what you like , it is your motor after all...LOL... But door bottom chequer plate IMO does look naff, and a lot of peeps question why it is there as it makes us wonder if the doors are knackered.

Cheers

I agree with what he said ^^^^^^
My landy had chequer plate sills on when I bought it. In the advert pictures it wasn't on. When I went to look at it I asked the dealer what was wrong with the sills. H said nothing, we just thought it would improve the appearance. Turned out there was nothing wrong with the sills until they drilled them full of holes to rivet the chequer plate on.

Having sustained a bit of damage on the bottom of the doors in the past I certainly don't see any problem with door plates and as far as bonnet plates, they end up being quite practical if you actually use the vehicle as a tool and not a status symbol.

A scourge on chequer plate. What is the point of it? Unless you have to walk over the bonnet etc. Just adding weight and increasing fuel costs.

I walk on my checker plate bonnet to get to the most safest seats on a live rally section when we used to do recovery work.
2 arse dents in truck cab roof.
Wings also have it so no scratches from tools or shackles.
No sills so no checker plate and none on my doors.

I go for practical not polished.

Are you for real?

A vehicle with the aerodynamics of a garden shed and you're worried about the weight of a Trolley jack increasing fuel consumption?

Maybe you should be driving Prius not a Land Rover?

FFS fuel economy on a Land Rover lol :p
I'm not worried cos I'd never use it. Yeah bring it on, chequer plate, bull bars , spotlights , snorkels, sliders diff guards, eh.

Check plate is fookin lush.

Depends on what you want from your motor, like I said, I have sustained lower door damage and ally chequer plate would have at least absorbed the impact better, on the bonnet you can stand all over it and use it as another tool in your armoury, snorkels are for wading and will save you a hydraulic damaged engine should you end up out of your depth so to speak, bullbars are brill, saves panel damage when you run down pedestrians you'll only need hose the blood and brains off, diff guards are the difference between driving home and getting the big yellow taxi if you do drive tough terrain, sliders and tree bars are there to save you some serious panel damage in tough terrain.

Can you see a link here? "most" of us that fit the protection are inclined to due to damage sustained in the terrain that we have driven.

Not saying everyone who fits them does so for practical needs but more for aesthetics, and more power to them.

I worked out my winch and the extra battery weigh a tad over 120lbs! And it's worth it's weight in gold when you need to self recover!

You been playing???;)

You have not allowed the weight of the ground anchor, strops, shackles,
Waffle boards. I know I used to have a weekend box full of it. ;)

I have been known to be "adventurous" shall we say :D

Oh god yeah, I've slimmed down the recovery kit a little, only two snatch blocks, 4 shackles, 1 tow rope and a tree strop, bought waffles boards but only carry them for the day out, ground anchor is something I've been looking at but I'm struggling to justify one TBH. Then there's the toolbox full of tools and spares for the just in case.......

Have you tried to put one or the fold up in the ground ?
The winchbitch has to guide it into the ground the harder you pull the deeper it goes. So unless you have wireless remote control it's a 2 person item.

Try to find a winch challenge event it good to watch a motor with 3 winches dragging its self round.
