Mainshaft spline

Hi,
I am new to the Landrover world and have recently bought a '89 defender 90, 300tdi.
I am planning on doing it up, but must say that I think that it is not in bad nick.


Anyway to the matter in hand, I have the clunk/bang/crash when I lift the clutch. Having scoured the forum I have reached the conclusion that I need to replace the mainshaft spline????

I have checked the UJ's and the A frame thingy.

Now as you will have probably guessed I am no mechanic but am in possession of a Haynes manual, spanners, socket set and various big hammers and am needing to do most of the work on this work of art myself, (mainly due to the fact that Mrs R is none to impressed with it)

Is there an idiots guide on how to do this on the website that anyone knows of?

you need to remove round pto cover off rear of transfer box and check splines first ,if they are worn you would need to get mainshaft changed in gear box ,something that requires more tools than big hammers

I can do a fair bit myself, is it doable for an amateur mechanic?
