Main gearbox oil fill - Series 3

What's the best way to fill my main box with oil?
The transfer box filler plug was siezed so I removed the little cover plate of the top and did it that way, but no such luck on the main. Any tips?

working from above is better with the floor up

have you tried a bit of heat from a blowtorch around the plugs, the aluminium should expand enough to loosen the plug.

filling up from top cover is ok but it does not control the fill level so ok for oil change but topping up would be a bit of a guess

I recently changed the oil in my front axle and topped up the gearbox. Of all the jobs on a Land-Rover it's the one I dislike the most. Next time I'm going to try doing something like this: Changing The Transmission Fluid - The Easy Way

It's the same design as a bong but used in reverse

It's OK - thanks for the advice, but I've managed to get the filling plugs out - I just needed bigger stilsons! Once my knuckle skin grows back I'll be fine.

Going to use garden spray type thing to pump oil in when it arrives (found dire warnings about using API GL5 instead of API GL4 on other some other threads).

int the pligs got 1/2" square sockets/lugs?

I just use a 1/2" drive ratchett.

I've got a f-off stainless steel syringe that holds nearly 1 litre with either a straight neck or 90° and if that won't do I put a bit of flexible pipe on the end to get it into filler-Job's a good un!

Yup I got one of them but with a flexi filler.
