Plenty of Ooomph in the M51 if you boot it, especially if chipped.:)

Yes Datatek, that was my opinion of it......Like I said, they were set up in the p38's that way but in the bmw saloons the throttling is different and they go like stink, especially when chipped. Anyway, casual driving is all I plan for it and I'd imagine in a classic which is a good deal lighter than a p38 anyway, It will be more than adequate.....

I've followed this post with some interest & admit to being neither a fan of conversions or an engineer, but looking at the project as a whole how many litres of petrol could you pour into a V8 for the eventual price of your conversion? Always assuming as well that you were happy with the final product & didn't have to do it all over again. Just an opinion ...

Like I said, this is just for the challenge of fitting an M51 which I happen to like, into a 2 door classic. The V8 that's in it is almost kaput and is showing low oil pressure and will have to come out anyway so, I was always thinking diesel as a replacement. Got myself a cheap Omega with lowish mileage and basic electrics. I have a mate who is going to do the conversion plate, cheap, if I decide to go that way. I am also considering a p38 R380 bellhousing adapted to fit the LT95. I'll be doing most of the work myself so, barring my time and my cut knuckles and plenty of cuppas, it shouldn't cost me very much.....I plan to make a coffee table out of the V8 by the way, and sell it on which will probably cover most if not all of my costs:eek:

a v8 on gas will be cheaper to run...(not a carbed one,but efi will be)..more powerful too

why keep the tractor gearbox?put in the r380...much much nicer..

Nah, LPG will never be cheaper than home made bio-diesel if you get the proper supply sources, I get waste veg free from my local chippie and resteraunt and I've sourced the methanol for 20p a litre......I agree the R380 is a far nicer gearbox but if I ever want to go back to a carbed V8???

Not when you take HGF & slipped liners, annual LPG service, plugs and leads etc into account and if you run bio diesel there is just no comparison.
