Lumpy up hills

Morning Guys,

I am the proud owner of my first Landy, its a 1974 series 3 truck cab diesel. I picked it up on Saturday after having a test drive and being really happy with it, I then drove it home from Hereford to Staffordshire (about 110 miles i think) some of which i braved the M5 for. I pushed her quite hard at times and estimate i was getting around 55mph out of her, i'm worried no that i've pushed her too hard and done some damage, I was reassured that she would cruise all day at 50 so wasn't too worried, however for a brief period of time she seemed to run very "lumpily" and lost power intermittently making me worry she was going to die. I pulled over at a couple of services to let her cool down (although not confident the temp guage works she didnt seem to be overheating) and she carried on quite happily after a 5 minute toilet break and we evenutually got home without disaster.

I opened the bonnet on my return and noted that there was oil around the rocker cover seal, i cant say for sure that this wasnt already there as the previous owner had topped it all up for me, but i'm worried that its leaking because i put too much pressure on her at time on the journey home, she also now seems to run loudly in 3/4.

Does anyone have ny opinions or advice on this? am i just being paranoid or is there the possibility that i have damaged her?

i should point out that she is still starting fine and running with out any nasty smoke (except from at start up).

Cheers guys,

Iain

First thing to do is change all the oils and filters. Inspect the old oil for swarf/teeth/bloody great lumps of metal

If she starts up and runs ok without clouds of smoke....especially under load then I wouldn't worry too much.

Intermitant loss of power I'd suspect fueling, check tank pick up pipe guaze (you've changed the filter by now, right?) crap in the tank, splits in fuel line (inc leak off pipes), sedimentor if you have one. Could be suspect lift pump......you can buy one cheap that won't work either

You can whip off the rocker cover and inspect the seal but if you ever get it completely oil tight then let me know how.....at least you know oils getting up there :p

A 2 1/4 diesel is about as simple as it gets so just work your way through the system piece by piece..........Good luck and enjoy :D

50mph? Unless its got overdrive or range diffs that sounds pretty high for a cruising speed. Mine sounds like its going to blow at that speed.

Morning,

Thanks for the replies, I wouldn't say we were cruising at 50, it was more like a short (and terrifying) burst of speed as 2 motorways merged!

I will buy replacement filters etc as suggested and look in to a new diesel pump lifter thingy mabob -would you recommend a particular brand for replacement parts? There are a mass of cheap eBay replacement parts but will it be a false economy? Should I try and source more expensive (and hopefully) bett quality parts.

I ave a Haynes manual on its way (I'm new to all this oily stuf) so will have a read and get to work!

Thanks again.

I generally try to avoid Britpart products. Some of their stuff is OK but a lot seems poor quality in my experience. A lot of the cheap parts do seem to be Britpart. It's a difficult one really because genuine parts can be 5 x the price for some things.

:5biagree::5biagree::5biagree::5biagree::5biagree:

exactly what he said ..........avoid britpart like the fekkin plague as in my opinion and experience they cant even make a fookin washer jet that works or aims at the windscreen never mind a fuel lift pump

a parts brand to look out for though is bearmach as ive never had a problem with anything of theirs

as for the rocker cover gasket get a cork one with the self adhiesive backing on it and stick that side to the rocker cover itself not the engine and make sure before fitting its surgicaly clean or wiped with plenny of babywipes and it wont leak speshuly if yer put an extra washer on the nutty bolty things holding the cover on :D:D:D
