Preface: I've owned this 300TDI now for a little over a year. Got over 400.000km on the clock. Don't know anything about the history of the car (abuse etc.).

Situation: The transfer box leaks oil like a sieve. Input, output, lids... Got some serious clunk in the drivetrain. Some in the transfer box: estimated 15-20 degrees difference between fore and aft propshaft. Mechanic told me the case is gone, new seals won't do.

So - what to do...

Currently I'm investigating my options with getting an overhauled unit because this seems the (nearly) easiest way to go, and I'll get the car on the road again in no time.

Read a lot on the net the last weeks - but I somehow got the nagging feeling I'm missing something. Really not a mechanic myself (for now, still so much to learn...)

So here's the pathetic plea for advice... :)
