Hi,

Bought a RH drive Freelander 2 2007 in the UK for use here in France. Lovely vehicle. In fact just returned after 3200 kilometre round trip to Denmark to go to a Rammstein concert (excellent btw).

But... sometimes, when I accelerate harder at low speeds, there's a sort of 'chugging' noise from either the automatic gearbox or the differential - can't quite make it out.

Any ideas?

welcome, you need to get it on a ramp and have or check underneath for any loose supports or gearbox leaks! Where abouts in France are you?;)

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the welcome. I'm in the Lot (46) 45min south of Brive. LR dealers in France are prohibitively expensive. If I drive the vehicle gently - no noise. But when I pull away just a bit faster than usual there's this chuff chuff chuff sound either from the auto gearbox or drive underneath. Sometimes it continues, becoming a light, rasping groan as it speeds up. But fine at speed on the motorway. Cruise at a 100mph all day (in Germany). Just changed the oil in the Haldex/diff. Little difference.

your just the other side of dep't 24 from us, we are dep't 16, 50 mins north of Bordeaux!
personally ive never been to the land rover dealers, I get the impression they look down there nose...
it needs checking out before your left in the middle of no where.. is it something you can do yourself?

I'm not really mechanically minded, have to admit, not with today's modern technology at least...

The 'Lack of traction' warning came up a month or so back, so I took it into Brive LR dealer and they stuck it on the computer and said the haldex unit needed changing (€1000 +). So I took it to our local garage, a good bloke, who said the Haldex often gives spurious messages if the oil in it hasn't been changed - so he changed the oil and it's been fine since..ie. no more Lack of Traction warnings. But still the noise.

is there no one near you who can help.
ive a ramp if fancy the journey? Maybe a long day out? Maybe a bearing underneath somewhere..
