Lpg

Anyone have any idea how to reset the gas gauge for a LPG system. Let me explain. I've an 88lt tank of which I can only get 45 lt of gas in. Now i can run for about another 30 miles while the gauge is on red. Never let it run out yet but I 'd like to know how to re set the gauge so that it reads more accurately. Any help would be much appreciated. Digel

The guages are notoriously rubbish.

Mine goes to red after about 60 miles! I just ignore it and go by the mileage.

According to the LPG certificate that came with the P38 when i bought it, it has a 92 liter tank (Where spare wheel used to be)

When the 'gauge' is telling me its empty i can only put in around 42 liters?

How can i judge its contents more accuratly and what type of mileage should i be expecting from this size tank?

correct me if im wrong, but a 92 litre tank in the spare wheel well? i find that hard to believe. I have two torpedo tanks under my disco, and the two of them only come to 80 litres.
as a rough guide i get around 3 miles to the litre.

Ah just checked the LPG certificate and it says 92 liters (tank water capacity)

This doesent mean 92 liters of LPG does it? If not how much LPG should normally fit inside this size tank?

Thanks mate, there must still be around 30L left in the tank then when the gauge is saying empty? (two red lights come on?)

LPG will change its size (density) when ambient pressure and temperature changes. In brief, you will get much less LPG into a tank on a hot day with low ambient pressure than you will on a cold day with high ambient pressure
or by using different pumps. You will soon get used to fill amounts varying by a few litres from fill to fill.

Thanks for that Yoda, I was under the impression I had a 92L tank as up until now, didn't know anything to do with LPG, but that made sense of it for me, cheers for that

I have a 90 litre tank in the same location (takes approx 70 litres depending on temperature and how accurate the pump is). I reliably get 235 miles out of that in my 4.6 no matter what kind of driving I've been doing. It's so reliable that I just use the trip meter to guage fuel level.

I always have a bit of petrol in the main tank in case I run out. Mine beeps loudly when it's run out of gas - Just have to manually switch back to petrol and carry on.

That sounds interesting mate, imgoing to give that a try that.

I have been getting around 97 miles from a 'full' tank of gas (90l tank) but from empty (Well, when the red light comes on) i can only fit in 35-40 liters...

So saying that my gauge is inaccurate, and i carry on driving on gas when the red light is saying 'its running out' will there be any consiquences of running out of gas? Then i will know for sure (In miles) when my tank will be empty?

Well as I said, mine just starts beeping until you switch back to petrol. No other effects whatsoever when I run out of gas.

My guage shows empty after 60 miles - they're bleeding useless.

Cheers Guy, il start doing that then mate and use the mileage trip from now. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't need 'bleeding' or somet daft if I ran out.

235 miles to 70 litres? thats some return. what system you running there? i cant get nowhere near that in my 3.9. not long had it. your Mpg is the best ive seen on here.

I used my LPG tank up completly yesterday, I used the trip meter this time rather than the crap LED gauge you get.

Its a Multipoint AG system

From 68L of LPG i got 215 miles, so i work that out at 14.4 mpg

Not quite. Do it too often and you could suck the waste residue from you tank (known as "heavy ends"). Do this lots and , long term it can damage your reducer especially if you do not have your system seviced regularly. In a service they "should" drain the heavy ends from your tank and reducer. This cannot be done if you take your car in for lpg service with gas in!

Really? I'd be happier with another 100 miles but that's never going to happen!

I've got an ovlm sequential system. Seems to work ok. No detectable difference between gas and petrol.

As for the sludge issue on empty, I wasn't aware of that. I've not had any probs with mine but at the very least, it gives you a baseline for the trip meter to get round the useless guages.
