lpg tank refill

i have just bought the dreaded p38 4.6hse on gas. now i filled it up when i got it and it took about 70ltr in a 90 litre tank which i allowed for only filling to 80%, this was when it was on the gas reserve red light. after filling i ran it to empty to see how far i got to a tank and when i went to refill it would only take 34 litres any ideas why as it still shows full on the gauge which has always been quite accurate

How many miles did you do?

I get about 250 miles out of 75lts on my 4.6 HSE

About the same as mine 240-250 I was told that the gauges are not that accurate.

I have a 95 ltr tank and I get approx 87 ltrs when full

Did you fill it up at the same place both times? I put 80+ litres into my empty 95 litre tank at an ASDA in Dundee, but at my local independent gas place in Aberystwyth I could only squeeze 50 litres in before it cut out, even though the tank was again completely empty. The fill level lights only show it as being half full, too. I think it's something to do with the gas pressure in the tank at the filling station.

250 miles off a full tank would be nice. I managed about 180. Mind you, I was towing a two tonne trailer.

LPG expands when warm, so the hotter it is when you fill the less fuel you'll get in the tank. You can prove this by putting a see through empty gas lighter in the fridge, along with the refill can. Give it an hour or so and then fill the lighter and watch how much more 'gas' you can get in the lighter.

Yeah, but only being able to get 34 litres in seems a bit more than I'd expect.

Did you actually run it out of gas, or are you just going by the guage? These guages are useless usually. Mine shows empty after 60 miles! I got caught out by this very same problem when I first got mine.

Mine actually beeps as it really runs out, regardless of what the guage says, but for fuel level I just go by the mileage. I get about 230 out of a tank on mine.

Fair point, but it has been very warm these past few days, and it does represent a substantial amount of expansion hardly the 250:1 you'd expect.

i filled up at a differant garage and it was a very hot day however the gauge still showed full. i got 195miles around town and i ran it untill it changed over to petrol

i had the supply pipe from the vapourizer to the rail, blow itself off.
build up of pressure apparently.
may need a new vapourizer.
i had a gas service about 10mths ago,and its going in this week. it scared my mrs who was driving it at the time.
and who came up with the 30-40 mpg on gas, as you see on most lpg range rover classifieds?
that smells like lpg!
