LPG switch orange light flashing

the orange light on the lpg switch adjacent to the G,
sometimes it is solidly on sometimes it flashes, the engine feels the same for either but i wouldn't mind knowing what it means.
any ideas?

You will need to let us know what car you have, engine size, what lpg system you have etc. You will then get some help from the people that have LPG but there are a lot of systems on the market. Hope this helps.

if the light adjacent the g is flashing it means its in standby mode ie waiting to change over to run on gas usually achieved by blipping the throttle and revving it to 1500rpm or above , and when the lights on constant it means the car is running on lpg , well thats how it works on mine anyway , hope this helps.

the system fitted to the car (1988 3.5 EFi auto) is a stako tank with OMVL regulator. the orange light flashes when the red light is on aswell at startup, then after switching the orange light is solidly on but sometimes i glance whilst driving and find it to be flashing.
doesnt affect the running (as far as i can tell anyway!) but i just wondered why it does it.

hi again as explained before is why it flash`s on start up , will also flash when gettin low on lpg but the fuel gauges are usually very unreliable.

hi rick, sorry, last bit i wrote is confusing.
i know about starting and switching but sometimes when driving along even with a full tank it starts to flash.

yes i understand mate and as i tried maybe not very well the level indicators , ( fuel gauge ) are notoriously unreliable and i think you will find its that , that is giving a false reading i personally wouldnt worry to much about it to be honest especially if everything is working ok .

I have the same setup on my 4.6 Ltd, and I have already noticed the fule guage is basically making things up. Told me the 95l tank was empty, but on refuelling I could only put 51l in before it was full! I've also noticed that the engine revs drop right off in start-stop traffic if the engine is not warmed up fully and LPG cuts in.

what make of lpg system do you have fitted chris ?

It's a Stako, judging by the certificate. Last night it kept showing the red 'empty' light and then back to a single green light - is it OK to run these dry, or should I refill when on the red? I've only had 130 miles out of 51 litres so far!

That works out nearly 12 to a gallon, on gas, that about right.

What driving style, around town or motorway.

Around town, 12's okay.

Forget the lights, fill up again, run it dry, record the mileage done.

Do that 3 or 4 times, work out your average distance between tank fills.

Then thats your range on gas.

I've run 2 gas range rovers and always done it that way.

On a 70 litre tank I would get approx 160 miles.

Thats why now I run a Oil Burner, I can fill up anywhere and not worry about finding gas stations that work.!!!!!

And I thought my V6 Spider was thirsty LOL! Thanks for that, and you are right, it is pretty much all town driving (probably not the best vehicle for that, guess I should have bought a Fiat 500 if I wanted fuel economy!). I'll run the tank dry then, and fill it up again - I presume that the engine will switch back to petrol once the gas truly runs out, regardless of what the level indicator claims?

Mine never switched back automatically, but you know when its going !!

I just switched back to petrol-quickly.

hi chris i think you will find that stako is the tank manufacturer and not the lpg system manufacturer , as for running your tank dry its something i personally try to avoid all fuels including lpg have inpurities in them .
as for you lpg figures they sound about righty as alfie says .
most lpg systems will automatically switch back to petrol when you run out of lpg almost without you even noticing well mine does anyway .
although your lpg tank is a certain litreage you will never be able to get that amount in it mine i think is 85ltrs but the most i can get in it is 63ltrs i hope this helps.

Thanks Rick - I'm using those lights as a rough guide, as they can never seem to make up their minds on how much fuel is left! Does anybody know if there is an easy way to delay the petrol>lpg swap over point? It sis swapping over too early, so am doing it manually at the moment. Or is this a specialist job? Thanks!

hi chris the lpg level light a notoriously unreliable i always go of my trip meter although mine do seem to be pretty good , as far as the changeover goes yes it can be altered ( assuming its ecu controled ) if you have a cd for the system and a laptop and interface lead away you go , if not then you will have to get it done by an lpg specialist either its easy mate.
