I am thinking about getting an LPG converted rangie and am not sure if it worth getting one. How reliable is the conversion if done correctly and exactly how much do u save? The car does not do the same MPG as it does on petrol i believe? I will be doing quite a lot of milage in it, is it worth getting or can the car not really be trusted??
 
I run a 92 RRC on a single point LPG system. I get about 150 miles to a tank of LPG (60 ish litres) and it costs £28 to fill it.
You don't really notice too much the power as it's not an amazing amount lost.Mines is reliable now after having running problems when bought it, but this had nothing to do with the LPG.
If your doing the miles it'll be worth it IMHO

I agree, my old classic was on gas. The power loss was minimal although for trials I used it on petrol, slightly better bottom end tourqe... Road use, LPG only..

I've been running my RRC classic on LPG for 3 years or so now. Single point system and get about 220 miles on a 70 litre fill - equates to just over 14mpg. But with LPG about half of petrol price gives a cost comparison of 28mpg against petrol. For a 4.2 V8 I think this is fantastic. I have never had any reliability issues with LPG. The engine oil at service time is noticeably cleaner than it ever was using petrol so can only assume that there is less engine wear going on. Performance drop-off is not normally noticeable.

All in all changing to LPG is a no brainer. I calculated that the cost of conversion was paid back in about 7 or 8 months - since then economic motoring
 
One thing to consider is the length of your typical journey. You should run the car on petrol until the engine is warm, so if many of your journeys are short you'll be on petrol much of the time and not see the potential savings. Other than that LPG is great in our 1993 Vogue SE,.
 
Converted mine - 86 3.5EFI - about 9 years ago.
Simple single point system, two undersill tanks, brackets welded to chassis.
Capacity about 70 litres. Around 160 to 190 miles to a fill even when towing.
Manually switched from one fuel to the other.
Starts on gas from cold with no problem.

mine seems to do more miles per litre on gas than it does on petrol :confused: (93'lse) with old single point system. i get around 190 miles out of the spare wheel tank, it's been a while since i've used it so i've forgotten how many litres it holds but i think it's around 55ltrs? The only time i use petrol is for the first couple of miles or if i'm off road.
 
Don't know from personal experience but a friend of mine has had 3 Classics, 2x 3.5's and a 3.9. He swears by LPG-his last Classic was like a mobile fuel tanker, 100 litre in the boot and 2x torpedo tanks under the chassis. He reckons he got payback in less than 12 months @ 12000 miles per year and consumption is only slightly less but he's still getting the equivalent of 30mpg based on running costs on gas.
If LPG over here was similar price to the UK, I would convert my 4.6 but the greedy bastid government hiked the tax up so it's only around 20p/litre cheaper than unleaded. At that rate I'll be pushing up daisies before I got my money back and felt the benefit.
Personally,if your doing more than 10000 a year, get a reputable system and go for it.
 
the words reliable and range rover dont belong in the same sentence. i bought a k plate vogue on gas for a grand and love it. its far less trouble than my last one, a 2001 diesel. if you want something reliable buy something **** like a micra that every no- one drives. classics are definately addictive, as is that lovely v8. just shut up and get one bought. if you dont like it bang it back on fleabay. you`ve got nothing to loose
 
Hi all.

I used to own a p38 but as i have gone through a divorce i lost the car as it was in wifes name......doh !. However i am now the proud owner of a 94 soft dash and having lpg on the other car would like to convert it. Is there a diy kit i can buy ? I had multi point on the p38 but previously had a single point on my other classic and would like to have that system again.

Hi, Obviously buy one already converted, and like the others say , lpg is under half the price of petrol . I also worked mine out to an equivalent 26-28 mpg. I bought my '92 se vogue last year , which had been converted in 2000 ! It has been totally reliable for the past year and when i had it safety tested two months ago , the examiner said it was well installed system , still using all the original fittings ! Its a LOVATTO system , with twin under sill tanks (60 ltrs.) The engine has done 160000 miles with oil changes done religiously through its life which included caravan towing throughout europe . The previous owner told me it only broke down on him twice in 8 years , both times on his drive !!
So , try to buy one with a full service history , not many owners , and as low a mileage as possible .That will sort engine /transmission reliability out. Now about the chassis and bodywork ..........!!!
