I'm wondering what is the problem.

Other night, warning light (low fuel pressure) came on and the car died (wife said it felt "heavier" and heavier, then died.). Low fuel light was also on.

Started up again after 15 mins. Filled with diesel, no problems since.

A couple of times a few months ago, it had difficulty starting and once died soon after starting. Again, was very low on diesel both times. Filling up resolved the issues.

I guess it's a problem with the fuel pump in the fuel tank, under the rear seats. Why do I only get the problem on low fuel condition?

Any tips much appreciated before I get to this job. Thanks.

it could be when the fuel tank is full it has the effect of syphoning I would renew the pump also when you do it make sure the filter on the bottom is clear and renew the separate fuel filter it will be under the bonnet next to the lift pump.

Thanks. How do you mean "syphoning". Do you mean the extra head of a filled tank provides additional pressure? Is this a commonly observed phenomenon on the Freelander 1?

I will check the filter on the bottom of the tank. And that is interesting you call it a "lift pump". I assume you mean the other fuel pump. - Why is it called a "lift" pump? I was wondering how the two pumps work together.

Thanks.

The one in the link I don't recognise as a Freelander 1 Td4 pump

What age is your car (last 8 of the chassis number would be better)

And that can determine whether you have the twin pump setup or the later single pump type

Year 2001. Which I understand means twin pump.
I've asked him to confirm it is suitable for a Freelander.
Thanks.
