Hi Started the Freelander up this morning only to be greeted with a loud RATTLE coming from rh side low down. (sounds like a loose plate of metal vibrating) The sound is there at idle and gets a bit louder when reved. The Engine is a 98 'L' series and runs fine, all the levels are normal. Had a good feel around nothing obvious. Any help please before taking to garage.

Have you been down under the vehicle and had a look ?
Could be anything from loose under tray to timing belt pulley problems .

This is your first post so no one knows if your proper clueless like me or worse .By right side do you mean o/s or drivers side on a rhd vehicle ,you could mean right as you look into the engine bay .

Dont take it to a mechanic, buy a haynes manual .If you take it to a mechanic every time something goes wrong, you will soon be broke and sick of your hole in the road .Mechanics more than anyone hate gaylanders, truth.

Hi Yes i do all my own servicing so i know my way round the vihicle. It's defferently on the drivers side low down, so i took the wheel, plastic sidesheld and the under tray off to get a closer look. I thorght it was one of the pullies or adjusters so i slipped the aux belt off and the noise is still there so i assume it might be coming from one of the cam belt pullys behide the cover! It is louder when the engine is cold and rattles more when free reving the engine.

I dont know the L series engine. Do they have a harmonic damper integrated into the auxiliary drive pulley as does the TD4?
These make quire a clatter when the rubber bush fails. Perhaps some Forum member can enlighten us.

Just to let you know that it turned out to be the cambelt tensioner. Just managed to get it to the garage before it gave up, Very lucky.
I didn't think it would sound like a loose metal clatter!
