Loud noise! 03 Freelander TD4

Started the other day like a very low purring noise when i hit about 30 sounded like classic exaust blowing so had rear back box changed as it was hanging off and garage said it was that. Now had that changed, made no difference! anyone got any ideas? like i said sounds like a low purring noise coming from arround rear but goes through the whole vehicle!

is it noisy when stationary?
how loud is it?
you could try blocking the end of the exhaust with your palm (briefly before your hand gets too hot), forcing the exhaust from any further holes that might be in the exhaust system.

No its not when stationary, it only starts to sound around the 30-32 mph mark and just gets louder until anout 45-50 mph when it just becomes constant as in no difference in tone. The guy at the garage said he tried the hand over exhaust but to be honest think he was useless!. Cheers i will try it though

VCU bearings?

How are the tyres? Any sign of them 'feathering' on the ede of the tread blocks?
