i have just had to recover the missus and her freelander1 TD4. we have had this car a while so she has been at the wheel for various breakdowns (gotta love a landy) she was on the motorway doing around 70 when (she says) it felt like when the intercooler pipe went last time. lots of smoke no power. i cannot find any holes in the pipes and the longer of the two was replaced about 2 months ago. there is however alot of oil in the larger of the 2 intercooler pipes. can anyone give me an idea as to what may be the problem. is it possibly the seals on the turbo? i know that the crank filter is around the time for a change.

the idea of having to remove the turbo again (posted thread about this around a year ago) is somewhat abhorent to me although last time i did it without having to remove the IRD.

please help if you can.

If the seals on the turbo had gone then I'd first look for blue-ish smoke as i believe they're oil seals.... But then again....

If its white smoke I'd be inclined to think head gasket or another water seal - has the engine oil turned gray? is there an increase in temperate indicate on the dash?

ok.... just spent the afternoon removing the turbo and........ it's the turbo seals..... can't believe the amount of oil there was in turbo, pipes, frikin everywhere.... lucky it didn't 'run away' quite a problem with an auto at least with a manuel you can stall the engine to stop it. i have just purchased a new cartridge for the turbo £110 not to bad really. arrives tuesday. thanks for your input people
