Hello All,

I recently bought a 1989 Defender 90. When I start it, lots of smoke comes out of the exhaust when the engine is cold. Once the engine has warmed up, there's no smoke. Is this normal?

Ta,
Pete.

I think (although I may be corrected) blue smoke is oil but if it clears after a while that should be ok. Mine (300tdi) is a bit smokey on start up but soon clears.

if it was constant white smoke then i'd be worried!

Thanks for that. Yes, after about 2 mins it clears up. If it is white, what would that be? Also, any one can suggest where to purchase a brush guard from? Went on the Paddocks website, and couldn't find one.

Re smoke - white is unburned fuel, common on cold diesels, blue is oil, can settle in the engine ovenight if the valve seals are worn, but not a huge problem, just watch the oil consumption. White can be steam, but if it is then the engine will usually be down on power quite a lot.
Re bull bars, yes be very careful as you are in Scicily and EU type approval regs apply, UK opted out. Is it on a UK or Italian reg? If its Italian a non type approved mod can be an MOT fail (at best) or impounded at the road side and on the spot fine (aka contribution to the Police party fund, don't expect a receipt!). I don't know how strict they are in Italy, but in Germany its a huge issue, they have been stopping UK registered Mercs for having after-market wheels that are UK legal but not EU approved. Mercedes are focing owners to buy approved wheels that, guess what, cost 5 times as much and are only available from MB.

When you say turbo diesel do you actually mean the 19j turbo diesel or the 200/300 tdi turbo diesel?

All useful info - thanks very much.

The LR is on Italian plates, but I will be shipping it to the states when I leave. And you honestly think the Sicilian police stops people??? You must be joking! And although they do have a MOT system here, it's a joke.
It's like being in the Valley's in the 1980s or even the 1960s:)) The smog, diesel pollution down here is horrendous! I was driving into work this morning doing about 150KM (not in the LR of course), and a hearse passed me with a coffin in the back :)) Nothing surprises me here any more.

I'm trying to upload a file of the bar I'm looking for. Seems I can't do it?
