Hi guys, got a few problems with my new 2.5 DT

1 - rear wipers dont work. Is there a fuse?

2 - ride is pretty bumpy and it is very vague in the steering department. I am looking into new bushes and balljoints. Anything i should know?

3 - EAS seems to deflate as soon as ignition is off. Bad?

4 - what is the valve in the attached pic? I found a hose from it to the engine is split.

5 - possibly to do with 4 above - cold and hot start isnt working very well at all. I am aware the M51 has hot start issues. Its a strange one. I can sit and wait for the glow plug light to go off, but it only seems happy to start from cold if i start it immediately after the engine check light goes out (looks like an injector) Leak off pipes, glowplugs or diesel pump (s)?

6 - seems that my main cabin vents have no warm air from them. The foot ones are fine, the side window ones are fine.

7 - all the A, B and D pillars look awful. The material has come off them!

8 - looking into fitting fog lights and heated electric seats. Is it similar to some cars where all the looms are there but not connected? As in can i connect fog lights for example and go from there?

9 - last one - what trim colours are there? I have seen Ash, Black, Grey, and ....stone.

cheers
Rob

1) you need to download RAVE, rear wiper is controlled by the BECM, not sure if there is a fuse, with the auto, it comes on if reverse is selected and the front wipers are on.

2) Drag link and track rod would be a good place to start. If the ride is bumpy it could be shocks or it's no at the correct ride height.

3)EAS dropping will just be old airbags leaking if you are lucky

5) Check leak off pipes and in tank pump. If it starts better with a full tank then suspect the pump.

6) Blend motors.

8) If it's an auto, you should not fit fog lights as the NS one obstructs the auto box oil cooler. If you still want them, I have a pair for sale in the "For Sale" section.

Oh and welcome to the joys of P38 ownership.

1) Mine is a manual. Seems to be that the rear wiper is off the wiper control arm, needs pulling to me?

2) This seems to be mostly when its at standard height. I shall get under it tomorrow.

3) I am hoping for being lucky!

5) good plan RE the full tank.

6) right, ill get on that.

8) just had a look. Again being manual i should be ok. I take it they will be 'plug and play'?

Thanks for the welcome :)

To fit electric seats into your car please check which version of BECM you have.
The loom plugs into this in 2 places, dependant of spec. A small black plug just to the left of the fuse panel and a larger green plug on the rear of the becm.
Once these have been connected you simply earth the loom using plug on it, plug 3 of the shorter loom plugs into the drivers and feed the rest of the loom across the car ready for the passenger seats to be plugged into. This side of the loom is only plugged into the seats.
This should enable you to have electric seats.
If your BECM is the right type you would also have memory on them too.
Friend of mine has a 1995 2.5DT and has installed Year 2000 seats into it and everything works as it should, obvious exception of the side airbags.
Hope this helps.

Re BECM; take off fuse cover on side of seat, there's a label on top on the BECM, you need to see if it's numbering starts L or H. To take leccy seats it must be H for Highline,( L is lowline, for more standard RR's without the toys!)

I cant see any label. Just the fusebox there, with some plastic ducting.

As an aside, i just noticed that there is a sound of a fan running from below the seat. I guess thats the BECM being alive still :(

Rear wiper is off wiper arm, you pull towards you, but should also come on if you select reverse with front wipers running I think.

Fog lights OK on the manual, the looms are there for connection but they will need to be enabled in the BECM and you will need the switch.

rob,

re your item 7 - I got a bottle of ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL ( IPA ) - £5 for 500ml from Boots - order it then they get it in for you.

All the post trims were easy to get off - prise back the rubber from the top - get a couple of fingers in and it pops off working from the top downwards. There are a few plastic bits with metal clips holding the trims in place - I broke one on a couple of trims but they went back fine.

I dabbed the IPA over the trim a section at a time and the fluffy stuff soaked it up and after a couple of minutes dissolved much of the glue.
I used a scraper with a Stanley knife type blade to gently ( don't mark the plastic ) scrape most of it off then a rub down with some more IPA.

Six bits of clean cream post trims and still half a bottle of IPA left.

To refit I slotted them in from the bottom and worked upwards.

Did them all in less than two hours.

Regards

Many thanks. I might just do that. could even paint them i guess :)

I just used a can of brake cleaner from the pound shop, sprayed the trim from a distance and the fluff just slid of easy, quick wipe with a paper towel and put it all back, looks better than new. I had considered recovering them with some leather, but I am happy with the outcome.

OK, some progress

Opened up the rear wiper motor covers and in the process of looking at that

The pic i mention in item 4 is the EGR valve, im not too worried about a split hose in that.

The cold start is lots better with over a quarter of a tank, so suspect in tank pump has gone. OEM or pattern replacement?

Bought some IPA to clean up the pillars.
