hi there, im new to this group, basically my next door neighbour has a land rover defender 90 300tdi and he recently had his clutch done on it.

but now it really lacks power, he says that he gets to 60 and then drops to 40 and so on and when he accelerates theres loads of black smoke from the exhaust. the local garage he had it at for the clutch said something about a transfer gearbox

was hoping that someone could possibly shed some light on the problem if anyone else has experienced anything like this.

thanks in advance

Sounds like the fuel pump timing is out. Black smoke is almost always unburnt fuel, been ****ed out of the egghaust. and the transfer box wunt have any effect on the fuelling. Sounds like the garage is full of tossers what don't know ****, Or they've fiddled with the injector pump in the hope you'll take it back. So they can charge ya a fortune to reset it..

cheers for the quick replies, im having a look at it for him tomorrow il have a look at the intercooler pipes and let yous know what i find any other help would be grand

Yes some times reffered to as the smoke screw, black smoke screw etc... its the low manifold boost pressure screw... but since it directly has an effect on smoke... you see where I am going?

Has the EGR been blanked off? I would be pointing the finger of blame in the direction of EGR valve or Turbo hose split or colapsing. They are the cheapest and often the most common reasons for black smoke and loss of power.

discomania - i see what you meen lol and im not sure if the EGR has been blanked off, still yet to check the pipes and things because hes not in at the mo

i was out just now having an ogle, and found that the top intercooler pipe looks like it has collapsed because its all kinked and so on also the bottom one has some thick gunkey oil on one end, awfly like the hose clip isn't tight enough, could this have anything to do with the turbo/ EGR thing?

The Colapsed hose is starving your engine of air. The fuel going in is the same amount. This means that the engine is overfueling in relation to the air going in. Stick a new pipe on and it should be back to normal.

The black marmitey type gunge is what clogs up the egr valve. Blank it over and fit the modified top hose at the same time. The non egr hose and blanking plate kits are only about £30 on ebay. It is worth flushing your intercooler out at the same time to get maximum benefit out of the mod.

do any of you have a photo filled guide to fitting the blank or will the blanking plate come with one and also how do you flush out the intercooler? some warm water from a hose or do you need pipe cleaners or anything?
cheers again

Do a search for fitting the egr blanking plate. I think it was biglad who did a guide on it.

To flush the intercooler petrol seems to be the prefered weapon. Pour petrol into intercooler. Bung a rag in each oriface. Shake vigourously. Empty intercooler and repeat process. Don't forget to let the petrol drain and vapourise before refitting.

I don't know quite why I went along the lines of adjusting the pump so much, I just like the theory that the garage fiddled with it!

I would pull the electronics and vaccum off the EGR valve (this will render it useless - blank it off when you get a chance and replace the T junction on the manifold feed pipe).

When does it smoke? At the moment I have the plug off the back of my manifold and its blowing a load of boost air out the back and doing he-haw and my 300tdi doesn't smoke much at all so it would have to be a reasonably sized hole.

It could also be that your injectors are a bit clogged/needing recalibrated if they send out a bad spray patten it can lead to bad combustion, dogey fuel?

Did it JUST happen after the clutch or did you just notice it then (after work we are all a lot more critical of our vehicles and notice these things).

Ah... I've done it again!

That will teach me to read in future! I am reading no country for old men at the moment so my excuse is I didn't need any more to read!

lol he says it only occured after the repair was odne he sayd that they also left his airbox hanging off and it was bouncing off the bonnet, the blanking kit i looked at on ebay had a new pipe for the top of the intercooler and was £25 so im going to get that for him. also i couldnt find the guide for fitting the egr blank lol
