Loss of omph! under 3000rpm

My 01 TD4 is lacking its old omph under 3000rpm, this was a sudden loss, fine one day and not the next!

It starts fine and runs smoothly, no smoke and no mgt lights on dash

It is totally flat until 3000rpm when you can feel the surge revs up to 4k without effort, but under 3k its very dead.

MAF?
 
Try disconnecting the MAF and then take it out on a test run. When the MAF is disconnected, the ECU will automatically be set to use default values as it will realise that it isn't getting a reading from the MAF. If the problem disappears when the MAF is removed, you can assume that the MAF sensor was at fault. If the problem persists, then it's not likely to be the MAF.

The Freelander isn't one of those cars that likes to spam people with dash warning lights. My previous car would have shown a dash warning light for just about everything, even if a bulb had gone out. Kinda useful in a way.
 
Have you checked your intercooler pipes for holes or even coming adrift?
I have had this very same fault before (not on a Freelander admitidly) and that is all it was.
 
i doubt it would be the intercooler piping if it was the engine management light would be on constantly my friend had that on his freelander, But if you want to be sure then check.
 
OK - Now confused. Disconnected MAF - Performance now back to normal, MPG leaps for typical 36.5mpg tp over 40mpg, a bit rattly on start up, but runs. grreat, starts fine, no smoke.

OK now fit new Pierburg MAF, performance drops, dead flat up to 300rpm and reluctance to rev, exactly same with old Bosch MAF, so disconnected again.

Anybody any ideas at what to look at next!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I'm sure I read somewhere that the pierburgh maff isn't fully compatable in standard form with the td4.
To use it you need a synergy 2 tuning box from roverron have a look at tuning-diesels.com it says this unit allows the cheaper pierburgh to be used instead of the bosh maff...................although I could be wrong!:eek:
 
That maf does and has replaced the original bosch without any problems.
I've had this exact problem before when replacing bosch with bosch but wasn't able to solve it in the time I had and the owner decided to leave it disconnected. At first I thought the new replacement was faulty so tried another only for that to do the same.
As a next step I would check the five wires from the maf connection to the ecu.

It the correct later compatible direct unit from Pierburg so should be OK, I will try cleaning the plug with IsoProply, anyone any ideas where the wiriing runs to check?
 
Just a thought on this, I think it might be no harm to check the map sensor, LR call it the boost pressure sensor (I think). It's mounted on the inlet manifold, and could well be full of oil and crud. I am just thinking aloud and could well be wrong.
 
Thanks for that, well worth investigating. A bit of searching has linked to other threads where the MAP was at fault giving exact same symptoms as mine, and disconnecting MAF seemed to finger the MAF but was not the problem. Just enjoying the performance and mpg from the disconnected MAF at the moment. Another job for the weekend
 
Do the job properly un fit a peirbough MAF, and tuning box..

that'll get it moving... i have a tuning box for sale less than half price!:)
