Bit of a weird one this, especially as we are just about to go off to Normandy! Used vehicle today no problem, parked up for a while when restarting there was very little power reaching the wheels but no slip... kept on going and it was obviously some sort of problem, tried using sport mode to select down to 1st gear still very little drive. Pulled in, turned engine off for a few seconds, the hey presto everything was fine again, has anyone else encountered this scenario? 2006 L322 3.0 diesel vogue with M57 engine and the dreaded GM 5 speed box.

Have a look around floor and boot sides for any water, don’t know about your area but we’ve have very heavy storms and today heavy rain most of the day. Certainly enough to seep into electrics.

Has the gearbox been serviced?
gearbox had oil change 18 months ago, for some reason I am convinced it has got something to do with the 'brain' of the vehicle, everytime I try exploring the options available something weird tends to happen to the vehicle electronics. No codes are showing on my reader..will take it on a proper run tomorrow and give it an 'italian tune up' and see what happens.

Hard to say without diagnostics or anything like that. Has the box been serviced or rebuilt? Looking at other posts people seem to just lose drive totally, others seem to get a bit of drive back then goes again. You said you still have some drive, just no Power?
If it’s been raining check the boot areas, there’s a lot of electrics in both sides, it does seem to be left side that gets wet most often but since it’s built the same there’s nothing to stop water getting in drivers side where a lot of relays and fuses are etc. does everything else work? When it’s driving does if feel smooth but no power? Or jerky/ miss fire? Etc?

The way it’s described it sounds electronic, different issue but mine other day had heavy steering, turned of and on then all good.

Only time I've had limp mode it was accompanied by "trans failsafe" on the dash.
As said above was the gb serviced or rebuilt?
Also how many miles has the gb covered?

When gearbox had its oil change did they say anything about sludge or filings in the sump? When mine was serviced I asked him about condition and his reply was “there was only a few very small filings and nothing to worry about and it’s common on nearly every auto box, problems start when there’s a lot of filings”

Oil change was done by previous owner who was very useful at 'spannering'. Took the old girl out for a 100 mile run early doors today and she ran sweet as a peach, dropped in at a 'friendly' garage who did a scan for a pack of beers and nothing showed up, no codes ne nada! I am still convinced the ageing and creaking 'brain' of the car causes weird anomolies and have vowed to use it as little as possible, let sleeping dogs etc. Thanks one and all for helpful suggestions.

Hmmm...you are probably correct. Funnily enough I used to design and run 'high tech' recording studios where we had access to the most modern test equipment, however our maintenance team used to have a small cricket bat nick named 'chicken man' that was used when all else failed to carry out 'percussive' engineering! There was no ryhme or reason, but it worked on too many occassions to be co-incidence and the mixing/recording consoles used very similar technology as to that of the 2002-2009 RR's M.OS.T and C.A.N Bus devices.
