I have a question about losing power while running / driving. I haven't been using the vehicle very often the past few months. Mainly because it need an exhaust ( I have it but waiting to install) and it runs rich( black smoke). I changed the plugs and intended to attempt carb adjustment. Well anyway snow is predicted so I figured I'd get move her around to a better location. I really let her warm up first, ran smooth (about 69000 as best as I can tell). Couldn't resist going for a spin. It started off fine ( other than the lack of power, maybe I'm expecting too much). Anyway about a half mile down the road I hear this fairly loud click and I loose power for a moment. I hit the clutch down shift. It regains power moves forward. Then same thing happens about the more time...loud click,loose power then regain power.
Almost sounded like it came from under the driver side seating area.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
Take it you are LHD but what engine? Losing power and click could be hand brake not releasing all the way, check if hand brake drum is getting hot next time it happens.

Yes it is a LHD with a 2.25 engine. That sounds logical according to where I believe the clicking noise came from.
If the hand brake is not releasing totally why would that cause her to lose power ?
It make sense to me why it drags or very little power but why cutting off ( like it's going to shut off).
 
It may well be worth checking the lift pump, try disconnect fuel line at carb [ there is with some carbs a little filter at the inlet connection] Pump lever and see if fuel squirts out.
Re reading original post, black smoke is a sign of to much fuel getting in, this would reduce power drowning the spark. Does it stink of gas/petrol? Cause here may be carb float/needle valve sticking. Just have to go through the items one by one.
 
Yes it is a LHD with a 2.25 engine. That makes perfect sense as to where I heard the clicking sound. Next question is why would that cause the temporary cut out of the engine. And two, if the emergency brake was partially frozen would cause the draggy loss of power?

I can remember, years back exchanging a small carb filter about the size of a large thimble on Rochester carb. This must be the fuel filter your talking about. It does have a petrol smell. I believe it's a Webber replacement on there now, without looking.
Just so I'm clear in my mind, your giving me two separate answers to the problems I'm having. Emergency brake for the cut off and carb issue for low power.

Yes pretty much, Long range diagnosis is not easy, just my experience of using Land rovers for 50 years.
Sometimes pics/video can help.
 
I'm all about the pictures and video, they really help a lot (as you probably figured out I'm not a mechanic).
So, if the brake is binding( clicking) it might just cause enough hesitation in the overall running of the engine cause by carb. Issue making the engine to quit briefly.
